SIA Blended Scotch Whisky

Clever blending has turned the often disturbing youthful cereal notes into an asset as they integrate well with the “fruit and nuts” theme of this whisky. – Rating: 80/100

Knob Creek Rye

I was surprised how gentle this is for a rye, too gentle for my taste, in fact. – Rating: 79/100

Linkwood 28 yo 1985 Signatory for TWE

October 27, 2014

The flavours are very dense and compact here which makes it hard to single out specific ones. It is a lovely whisky, but it needs time to open up. – Rating: 87/100

Laphroaig Select

There really is not very much going on here, but I found the long aromatic finish very pleasant. – Rating: 82/100

Aultmore XO Douglas Laing Old Particular

October 18, 2014
Thumbnail image for Aultmore XO Douglas Laing Old Particular

The young age is quite obvious here, but the strong sherry does a good job in not letting this turn into an annoyance. – Rating: 84/100

Bowmore 15 yo 1999/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

October 16, 2014
Thumbnail image for Bowmore 15 yo 1999/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

The typical Bowmore fruitiness is balanced by quite strong peat and spices here. Some water and time is need until it fully opens up. – Rating: 86/100

Glenmorangie The Taghta

October 15, 2014
Thumbnail image for Glenmorangie The Taghta

A most interesting whisky that is dominated by aromatic spices. Fruity aromas are present but remain in the background. Nice but not an easy-going sipper. – Rating: 86/100

Clynelish 1997/2014 Wemyss “Cayenne Cocoa Bean”

October 14, 2014
Thumbnail image for Clynelish 1997/2014 Wemyss “Cayenne Cocoa Bean”

For me it is more coco than cocoa, but anyway, this is a very sippable and typical Clynelish. At cask strength this would have been a true cracker. – Rating: 85/100

Glen Garioch 1989/2014 Wemyss, “Peaches and Cream”

October 12, 2014

A very nice whisky from the time they still had their own floor maltings at Glen Garioch. The hint of smoke goes very well with the creamy fruitiness – Rating: 86/100

Ardbeg Supernova SN2014 Committee Release

August 28, 2014

So far I have only tasted the 2009 version of the SN which stupefied me. This is much more civilzed but still very powerful stuff. There are enough other aromas present to prevent this from turning into a mere peat bomb. – Rating: 88/100

Clynelish 17 yo 1996/2013 Douglas Laing Old Particular

August 15, 2014
Thumbnail image for Clynelish 17 yo 1996/2013 Douglas Laing Old Particular

Especially on the palate this is not a very typical Clynelish, it is rather rich and quite fruity, almost succulent. – Rating: 85/100

Dailuaine 15 yo 1998/2013 Douglas Laing Old Particular

August 8, 2014
Thumbnail image for Dailuaine 15 yo 1998/2013 Douglas Laing Old Particular

This is a very nice fruity aperitive style whisky, rather light in character but rich in taste.
– Rating: 86/100

Aultmore 1982/2012 Wemyss “Sugared Almonds”

July 30, 2014
Thumbnail image for Aultmore 1982/2012 Wemyss “Sugared Almonds”

The name of this whisky does not really do the fruitiness justic which I think is the primary component of this fine whisky. – Rating: 85/100

Lord Elcho 15 yo

July 28, 2014
Thumbnail image for Lord Elcho 15 yo

Quite a nice blend with a good combination of fruity and spicy flavours. The finish could be a bit longer, though. – Rating: 83/100

Aberlour 23 yo 1989/2013 Cadenhead Small Batch

July 20, 2014

Bourbon casks are rather unusual for this distillery, but this does not have to mean this whisky is more boring than your usual sherry cask Aberlour. A fine creamy malt with nice fruity flavours. – Rating: 86/100

Girvan 33 yo 1979 Cadenhead Small Batch

July 17, 2014
Thumbnail image for Girvan 33 yo 1979 Cadenhead Small Batch

Don’t be fooled by the light colour, this excellent grain whisky is very flavour-intensive but still has a light character. – Rating: 87/100

Glencadam 22 yo Abbey Whisky Rare Casks

June 27, 2014
Thumbnail image for Glencadam 22 yo Abbey Whisky Rare Casks

The whisky has pleasant fruity aromas and a nice creamy mouthfeel, but the spiciness – pepper in particular – is overpowering. – Rating: 82/100

Longmorn 21 yo 1992/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

June 12, 2014
Thumbnail image for Longmorn 21 yo 1992/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

The wood has done a fine job here, the aromas are pleasantly spicy but not overwehelmingly so. The fruits play second fiddle here. – Rating: 85/100

Glenrothes 23 yo 1990/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

June 2, 2014
Thumbnail image for Glenrothes 23 yo 1990/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

Very enjoyable. If you believe in whisky regions, this would be your typical unsherried Speysider. Not the most complex of malts, but the balance of fruit, sweetness and spice is just right. – Rating: 86/100
