Arran 10 yo – Revisited

Definitely an improvement over the older version. It has full flavours and a strong body, the spices are quite prominent, though. Needs a bit of water. – Rating: 85/100

Teacher’s Origin

There must be quite a bit of Ardmore in this rather voluptuous blend, the smokiness is well complemented by fruity caramel notes. – Rating: 83/100

Puni Alba

Of course you can notice that this is a very young spirit, but the strong cask influence takes away some of the newmake character. It is not unpleasant at all, but indeed “Grain Eau de Vie” fits it much better than “Whisky” – Rating: 72/100

Young whisky can be excellent, especially with strong peat or sherry. But this dram is just naked with nothing to hide its immaturity. – Rating: 73/100

Tamdhu 10 yo

February 11, 2014
Thumbnail image for Tamdhu 10 yo

I have read many good reviews about this new Tamdhu standard bottling, but I cannot become friends with it. There is just too little in there to pick up. – Rating: 67/100

Talisker Storm

January 15, 2014
Thumbnail image for Talisker Storm

Following the trend of wood-engineered NAS whisky, this Talisker offers a different, fruitier, angle than the regular 10 yo; good but not necessarily better – and more expensive. – Rating: 85/100

Wasmund’s Copper Fox Rye

January 8, 2014

The nose is rather strong and pleasant while the palate lacks a bit of the power you would expect from a rye. Overall quite a nice dram. – Rating: 80/100

George Dickel No. 12

December 29, 2013
Thumbnail image for George Dickel No. 12

A rather light Tennessee whisky that is on the dry side of the spectrum. It has some nice flavours but the finish could be a bit more pronounced. – Rating: 81/100

Dalmore Vintage 2000

December 12, 2013

If it were not for that odd cardboardy tang, this whisky would actually be pretty good. But so it isn’t. – Rating: 72/100

Tomatin Cù Bòcan

September 6, 2013
Thumbnail image for Tomatin Cù Bòcan

This is only peated at 15ppm but it feels stronger, especially with a few drops of water. There’s a bit of a trade-off with the trademark Tomatin tropical fruit, but it’s quite a nice dram overall. – Rating: 81/100

Tullamore Dew 12 yo

September 5, 2013
Thumbnail image for Tullamore Dew 12 yo

Unusually sweet and with a syrupy mouthfeel, this is not really what you would expect from an Irish blend. Fortunately the sweetness is backed by a healthy dose of spice. – Rating: 82/100

Macduff 15 yo Vom Fass

August 23, 2013

This rather inexpensive dram is actually quite tasty, a typical bourbon cask whisky already showing some fine maturity. – Rating: 84/100

Balvenie Doublewood 17 yo

August 15, 2013
Thumbnail image for Balvenie Doublewood 17 yo

While having a superb nose, this older Doublewood version does not quite reach the quality of the almost legendary 12 year old. But go for it, if you like spicy drams. – Rating: 85/100

Auchentoshan Three Wood

August 9, 2013
Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan Three Wood

The sweetness of this dram is almost too heavy, but the wood spices keep it in balance. The nose is very nice, the finish a bit short. – Rating: 82/100

Bushmills Black Bush

July 15, 2013

A decent daily dram, not more and not less. It feels a bit more like a Scotch blend than an Irish. – Rating: 80/100

Aberlour 12 yo Non Chill-Filtered

May 31, 2013

This is a very decent daily dram with nice rich flavours though it is not not overly complex.
– Rating: 83/100

Cutty Sark Storm

May 25, 2013
Thumbnail image for Cutty Sark Storm

The fruity part of this blend is quite nice, but the sweetness and the roughness of young grain are still dominating. – Rating: 69/100

Glenglassaugh Revival

May 20, 2013
Thumbnail image for Glenglassaugh Revival

The nose is rather immature, but on the palate this young whisky is quite enjoyable. – Rating: 76/100

Auchentoshan Heartwood

May 17, 2013
Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan Heartwood

The fruit flavours taste a bit artificial and the finish is one of the shortest I have experienced in a single malt, but for the rather cheap price it is okay-ish and a step up from the Springwood. – Rating: 74/100

Clynelish 1997 Wemyss “Fresh Fruit Sorbet”

May 12, 2013
Thumbnail image for Clynelish 1997 Wemyss “Fresh Fruit Sorbet”

The nose is quite strong and matches the descriptor, the palate is much more sublte but not unpleasant. – Rating: 84/100
