It’s that time of year again, Ardbeg release their eagerly anticipated annual special bottling.

Bowmore Small Batch With Matching Montezuma Chocolate

April 22, 2014
Thumbnail image for Bowmore Small Batch With Matching Montezuma Chocolate

A young entry level malt in the trademark fruity and mildly peated Bowmore style, it makes for a pleasant sipping but does not provide the complexity found in the older expressions. – Rating: 83/100

Arran 10 yo – Revisited

April 21, 2014
Thumbnail image for Arran 10 yo – Revisited

Definitely an improvement over the older version. It has full flavours and a strong body, the spices are quite prominent, though. Needs a bit of water. – Rating: 85/100

Glenmorangie Astar

April 9, 2014

This whisky is most unusual but I really like it. The mushroomy character is actually quite intriguing and the bottling strength of 100 Imperial proof gives it a nice punch. – Rating: 86/100

Highland Park Loki

March 3, 2014
Thumbnail image for Highland Park Loki

Despite its age of 15 years, this whisky has retained a nice freshness that is complemented by softer and more mature flavours. – Rating: 87/100

Preußischer Whisky 3 yo

February 19, 2014
Thumbnail image for Preußischer Whisky 3 yo

Bold spicy flavours dominate this whisky. While you can notice it is not very old, the fresh wood does a good job in covering the signs of youth. It might be a controversial dram but I like it. – Rating: 83/100

Glenmorangie Companta

February 18, 2014
Thumbnail image for Glenmorangie Companta

A well done wine finish that leaves enough room for the whisky to be noticed. It is quite smooth, maybe even a tad too much so. – Rating: 85/100

Tamdhu 10 yo

February 11, 2014
Thumbnail image for Tamdhu 10 yo

I have read many good reviews about this new Tamdhu standard bottling, but I cannot become friends with it. There is just too little in there to pick up. – Rating: 67/100

Redbreast 21 yo

February 9, 2014
Thumbnail image for Redbreast 21 yo

The nose is almost a bit solventy, but on the palate there is a sweet fruity explosion. It might be difficult if not impossible to find a better representative of the Irish potstill style. – Rating: 90/100

Edradour 2006/2013 for The Whisky Exchange

January 26, 2014
Thumbnail image for Edradour 2006/2013 for The Whisky Exchange

This is an excellent example how a good sherry cask can make a very young whisky shine. It has lots of power and lots of flavour. – Rating: 87/100

Balblair 1975/2012

January 20, 2014
Thumbnail image for Balblair 1975/2012

The rather short and almost trivial finish spoils for me what could have been a very fine and delicate single malt. – Rating: 83/100

Talisker Port Ruighe

January 17, 2014
Thumbnail image for Talisker Port Ruighe

The port finish adds a very sweet fruitiness that fortunately does not quite succeed in destroying the Taliskerness of this whisky. – Rating: 84/100

Talisker Storm

January 15, 2014
Thumbnail image for Talisker Storm

Following the trend of wood-engineered NAS whisky, this Talisker offers a different, fruitier, angle than the regular 10 yo; good but not necessarily better – and more expensive. – Rating: 85/100

Old Pulteney Flotilla 2000

December 18, 2013

It has a nice and fresh nose, but on the palate it feels still somewhat immature. The rather sharp spiciness is not balanced by the other flavours. – Rating: 79/100

Dalmore Vintage 2000

December 12, 2013

If it were not for that odd cardboardy tang, this whisky would actually be pretty good. But so it isn’t. – Rating: 72/100

Dimple Pinch 12 yo – Comparing Old And New(-ish)

November 12, 2013
Thumbnail image for Dimple Pinch 12 yo – Comparing Old And New(-ish)

I was lucky enough to get hold of a fairly old bottle of Dimple 12 yo and a rather recent one. Needless to say a head to head comparison is appropriate here

Oban 12 yo Unblended Highland Malt

November 3, 2013
Thumbnail image for Oban 12 yo Unblended Highland Malt

A very gentle but also very refined dram with that old fashioned “they don’t make them like this anymore” taste profile. – Rating: 86/100

Bunnahabhain 40 yo

October 29, 2013
Thumbnail image for Bunnahabhain 40 yo

This oldie has a very rich nose, but it is surprisingly light and fragrant on the palate. Only the price of almost £2000 is a wee bit steep. – Rating: 87/100

anCnoc 22 yo

September 10, 2013
Thumbnail image for anCnoc 22 yo

It still has the lightness Knockdhu is known for, but the long time in the casks have also given it a nice richness not seen in their younger bottlings. – Rating: 86/100

Bruichladdich The Laddie Sixteen

September 8, 2013
Thumbnail image for Bruichladdich The Laddie Sixteen

Enormously creamy with the typical Bruichladdich fruitiness, this dram may not be the most complex of all, but it is immensely sippable. – Rating: 87/100
