Strathisla 1965/2011 Gordon & Macphail

February 29, 2012

The rather overwhelming sherry does not quite manage to cover the traces of the decades in this very old malt. Lots of fruit meets lots of wood. A sherry monster wielding a huge wooden sledge hammer. – Rating: 86/100

The general taste of this whisky is very nice indeed, but there is a spirty edge to it that takes away some of the pleasure.

Imperial 1997/2010 Gordon & Macphail

On the nose this malt seems older than it actually is, the palate is more youthful. A very strong attack on nose and palate calls for water which brings out more spices in exchange for sweetness. – Rating: 87/100

Linkwood 1991/2006 Gordon & Macphail

This is a very fine sherried malt with a gorgeous nose. The palate is just a touch too much on the sweet side to be truly outstanding. – Rating: 86/100

Longmorn 46 yo 1964 Gordon & Macphail

June 18, 2011

This superb malt shows quite a bit of wood, but the strong flavours and the complexity are powerful enough to keep it in balance. – Score: 92/100

Miltonduff 1969/2010 Gordon & MacPhail

This is an excellent light bodied sherry monster with a lot of flavours and just enough wood to make it even richer. It’s a pity that there are so no original bottlings of this distillery anymore. – Score: 88/100

Mortlach 1998/2010 G&M for Whiskyshop Dufftown

May 16, 2011

The nose is almost disappointing, but the excellent palate delivers a strong reconciliation. A very rich and beefy Mortlach that becomes very cloudy diluted to around 40% – Rating: 86/100

A nice fruity dram with a surprising light smokiness, not a real cracker but quite enjoyable. Bottled almost 10 years ago and still available. – Rating: 82/100

This malt reminds my a little of the infamous durian fruit that can also give you a good whiff of cheese. But in fact I quite like it, just as I like durian. – Rating: 80/100

Strathisla 30 yo Gordon & Macphail

September 19, 2010

The terrific sherry nose is almost matched by the very complex palate. But 43% ABV just a little too weak fo this malt. Rather dry but not overly woody for its high age. – Rating: 88/100

Inverleven 1985/1998 Gordon & Macphail

April 23, 2010

This must have been a dead cask. The taste isn’t bad, but very unspectacular. – Score: 64/100

Mosstowie 1979/2001 Gordon & McPhail

March 27, 2010

A smooth sherried malt with a great nose, but the 40% bottling strength is too weak to lift it from good to great – Score: 83/100

Lochside 1981/1996 Gordon & McPhail

December 19, 2009

Very complex and well-balanced, perhaps a bit watery due to the bottling strength of 40%. – Score: 89/100

Great nose, but on the palate the balance is a bit off towards the wood. – Score: 80/100

Glenburgie 1968, 75 cl bottle

November 28, 2009

A nicely balanced dram, the nose being fruitier than the palate. The bottling strength of 40% doesn’t serve it well, though. – Score: 84/100

St. Magdalene Cask No. 20 – 1975/2003

G&M Reserve – 49% My Tasting Note Nose: Slightly smoky, caramel, leather, spices Palate: Ginger, tea, a bix waxy, “farmy”, some caramel and a touch of lemon Finish: Long with a bit of smoke Overall: They don’t make Lowlanders like this anymore. Very full-bodied, noticeably smoky and with a kind of earthy spicyness that is [...]

North Port / Brechin 1982/2008

This whisky is rather tame for its age. A definite lack of complexity and the aromas don’t really fit together – Score: 69/100
