The virgin oak has left a massive imprint on the spirit, so despite the many wonderful flavours present in this whisky the tannic bitterness is a bit much for my taste. – Rating: 84/100

Big and bold wood flavours dominate this chewy bourbon. The finish is a bit on the tannic side but the overall quality is impressive. – Rating: 86/100

Daftmill, ca. 7 yo

The style is very light and the young age of this is quite obvious. It shows promise but the slight bitter note is a bit disturbing. – Rating: 77/100

This is an excellent example how a good sherry cask can make a very young whisky shine. It has lots of power and lots of flavour. – Rating: 87/100

Rather sweet overall and feeling a bit watery even at 46%, this dram doesn’t really convince me. – Rating: 75/100

Ardmore 2003/2010 Whisky & Rhum

March 26, 2012

This malt makes no secret of its young age. The youthful roughness is not complemented by an awful lot of flavour, though. – Rating: 79/100

Kilkerran Work In Progress 2011

The Kilkerran successfully continues its path to maturity. At only seven years it is already remarkably ‘grown-up’. A perfect sipping dram. – Rating: 85/100

Port Charlotte 2002/2010 Whisky Doris

January 7, 2012

A great heavily peated malt, very strong smoke combined with a nice underlying sweetness. It is still a bit young and rough but it’s an excellent dram. – Rating: 89/100

W. L. Weller 7 yo

For a wheated bourbon, this packs qute a punch. A decent dram and a good value. – Rating: 81/100

Ron de Jeremy

This rum is a bit on the sweet side. It is actually quite sippable, but the fruity and spicy flavours have to fight a bit against the sweetness. – Rating: 80/100

Jim Beam Distillers Series No.1

April 5, 2010

The nose is a bit “chemical”, but the palate is quite nice, albeit a bit spirity. Much better than the standard bottling but still no true winner. – Score: 75/100

Jura Heavy Peated 1999/2006

September 9, 2009

A great young peat monster that doesn’t have to hide behind its cousins from Islay. – Score: 91/100

Very complex aromas that I can’t possibly hunt down all. Exceptional for such a young whisky. – Score: 88/100
