18yo — Dramming — Page 3

Tamdhu 1991/2009 C&S Dram Collection

July 29, 2010

The strong banana flavour notes make this a quite enjoyable dram. There is not too much complexity, though. – Rating: 81/100

Bunnahabhain 18 yo

July 5, 2010

A great dry sherried malt that even reminds me a little of the 18 year Macallans – but for a much friendlier price. – Rating: 87/100

Tullibardine 1991/2010 C&S Dram Collection

July 3, 2010

A rather generic bourbon cask malt, not bad but not earth-shattering either. – Rating: 78/100

Glenfarclas 1987 Quarter Casks

July 1, 2010
Thumbnail image for Glenfarclas 1987 Quarter Casks

A tightly woven network of complex but subtle flavours that make this whisky a delight to enjoy drop by drop. There is a distinct woody dryness but it is not overpowering the other flavours. – Rating: 88/100

Macallan 18 yo 1987 vintage

June 15, 2010

This kind of whisky is what made The Macallan famous. A perfect balance of sherry and oak with a plethora of fruit and spice flavours. The Sherry Oak 18s are becoming harder and harder to find though, which unfortunately also shows on the price tag. – Rating: 92/100

Smokehead Extra Black 18 yo

June 14, 2010

It’s hard to pin it down, but I am not utterly convinced by this old version of the Smokehead. The nose is great, but on the palate the different flavours feel more like unconnected bits and pieces instead of being a harmonic ensemble. Given the high price tag, I am mildly disappointed. – Rating: 83/100

Bowmore 18 yo

May 29, 2010

The character is not unlike the 15yo Darkest, but I think the 18yo lacks some of the richness without offering much in return. Especially the finish is a bit on the weak side. – Score: 82/100

Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist

May 26, 2010

The nose is terrific, but on the palate the sweetness is a little too much for my taste. But that’s just complaining on a very high level. It still is a damn fine malt. – Score: 87/100

Balblair Vintage 1991/2009

May 25, 2010

Rather gentle and unobstrusive, some people call this type a summer whisky which I think is a bit of a euphemism. There are some splendid malts of this type around, mind you. But this is not one of them. – Score: 78/100

Macallan 18 yo 1979 vintage

March 28, 2010

A marvelous old-fashioned sherry whisky, very dry but still smooth and not overly spicy. – Score: 91/100

Glenlivet 18 yo

March 28, 2010
Thumbnail image for Glenlivet 18 yo

Very creamy and fruity, complex but very approachable. A very nice dram. – Score: 86/100

Mortlach 1990/2008 Wilson & Morgan

December 27, 2009

The palate is very dense in a way that I find it very hard to identify distinctive notes. This means it is a very typical and very fine Mortlach, but not quite as complex as others. – Score: 87/100

Talisker 18 yo

October 14, 2009
Thumbnail image for Talisker 18 yo

A very fine whisky, perfect balance between peat and spice. Too bad they raised the price to stellar leveles. – Score: 90/100

Adelphi Breath of Speyside 1991/2009

October 1, 2009

Promising nose but the bitterness takes away much of the pleasure. A few years too long in the cask? – Score: 78/100

Glen Grant 1990/2008 Signatory

September 22, 2009

A nice contrast between dried fruits in the nose and tropical fruits on the palate. Needs a good amount of water. Wood spice is a bit too dominant for my taste. – Score: 80/100

Laphroaig 18 yo

August 19, 2009
Thumbnail image for Laphroaig 18 yo

Much more wood and less rounded than the 15yo. In a way it’s closer to the 10yo. But I think I still prefer the 15yo. – Score: 86/100

Glenrothes 1990 18 yo Cadenhead

July 24, 2009

Almost like the big brother of the Blair Athol Dark Sherry. They take the same direction, but due to its higher age, there is more wood influence and complexity. Just a drop can keep you busy for minutes. – Score: 92/100
