This rare light-bodied dram has a great nose, but the palate is a little too spicy to make it a truly great whisky. – Rating: 86/100

Kilbeggan 18 yo

April 14, 2011
Thumbnail image for Kilbeggan 18 yo

The Kilbeggan 18 is an excellent blend that with its rather strong vanilla notes even bears some resemblance to a bourbon, but with a smoothness that sets it apart from the former. – Rating: 86/100

Sazerac 18 yo 2010 Release

April 4, 2011
Thumbnail image for Sazerac 18 yo 2010 Release

The mix of fruit, exotic spices and dry wood flavours in this rye is excellent. The age is well noticeable, but the spirit is so rich it has no problems to deal with it. – Rating: 88/100

Tomatin 1990/2008 Single Cask #16351

March 24, 2011

This malt is proof that all casks are different. It shares similarities with neighbouring cask #16352 but the flavour profile is notably more complex and richer overall. – Rating: 86/100

Tomatin 1990/2008 Single Cask #16352

March 5, 2011

A rather straightforward bourbon cask whisky. It is not bad at all but you can get comparable malts for much less money. – Rating: 83/100

Glendronach 18 yo Allardice

January 31, 2011
Thumbnail image for Glendronach 18 yo Allardice

This is not just a sherried whisky, this is a sherry whisky. I feel almost tempted to describe it as a 46% ABV oloroso but the whisky character is fully intact nonetheless. – Rating: 89/100

Greenore 18 yo

January 22, 2011

Quite a nice grain whisky with a very dense palate, not easy to pick up speficic notes. Perhaps a tad on the bitter side but still very pleasant – Rating: 84/100

Springbank 18 yo

December 28, 2010
Thumbnail image for Springbank 18 yo

A quintessential Springbank with a silky mouthfeel, very complex with lots of flavours to discover. It can act both as a winter warmer and a summer refreshment. – Rating: 88/100

Blackstone 18 yo

December 27, 2010

This is a typical “You get what you pay for” supermarket malt. It’s not really bad but the floral notes are much too dominant for an enjoyable older malt. – Rating: 74/100

Yamazaki 18 yo

November 23, 2010
Thumbnail image for Yamazaki 18 yo

A very rich sherry monster with a highly complex flavour profile. You can taste the age but the wood influence is only very gentle. – Rating: 90/100

Highland Park 18 yo

November 21, 2010

A marvelous dram for relaxing on a cold evening. This one has got it all: Peat, smoke, fruit, sweetness, spice. The best value of the HP standard range. – Rating: 90/100

Johnnie Walker Gold Label

Quite a nice blend with a very interesting nose. One the palate it could use a little more fruity flavours. – Rating: 81/100

Glenmorangie 18 yo “Extremely Rare”

October 27, 2010
Thumbnail image for Glenmorangie 18 yo “Extremely Rare”

A sweet creamy and fruity malt with a slight spiciness that is quite a nice dram, both complex and unoffensive. But like many Glenmorangies the price is a little too high to make it a bargain – Rating: 85/100

Caol Ila 18 yo

October 21, 2010
Thumbnail image for Caol Ila 18 yo

This is a most enjoyable expression. Quite strong but not overwhelming peat combined with a nice fruitiness, rounded off with gentle spices. – Rating: 88/100

Tamdhu 1991/2009 C&S Dram Collection

July 29, 2010

The strong banana flavour notes make this a quite enjoyable dram. There is not too much complexity, though. – Rating: 81/100

Bunnahabhain 18 yo

July 5, 2010
Thumbnail image for Bunnahabhain 18 yo

A great dry sherried malt that even reminds me a little of the 18 year Macallans – but for a much friendlier price. – Rating: 87/100

Tullibardine 1991/2010 C&S Dram Collection

July 3, 2010

A rather generic bourbon cask malt, not bad but not earth-shattering either. – Rating: 78/100

Glenfarclas 1987 Quarter Casks

July 1, 2010
Thumbnail image for Glenfarclas 1987 Quarter Casks

A tightly woven network of complex but subtle flavours that make this whisky a delight to enjoy drop by drop. There is a distinct woody dryness but it is not overpowering the other flavours. – Rating: 88/100

Macallan 18 yo 1987 vintage

June 15, 2010

This kind of whisky is what made The Macallan famous. A perfect balance of sherry and oak with a plethora of fruit and spice flavours. The Sherry Oak 18s are becoming harder and harder to find though, which unfortunately also shows on the price tag. – Rating: 92/100

Smokehead Extra Black 18 yo

June 14, 2010
Thumbnail image for Smokehead Extra Black 18 yo

It’s hard to pin it down, but I am not utterly convinced by this old version of the Smokehead. The nose is great, but on the palate the different flavours feel more like unconnected bits and pieces instead of being a harmonic ensemble. Given the high price tag, I am mildly disappointed. – Rating: 83/100
