Glen Breton 14 yo

August 1, 2015

Sorry, but the soapy notes on the palate ruin the experience for me. Without them it would have been a light and delicate single malt. – Rating: 63/100

Benrinnes 2001/2014 Wemyss “Rhubarb Royale”

A very nice fruity dram, surprisingly light for what you would expect from Benrinnes but richly flavoured anyway. – Rating: 86/100

Highland Park 14 yo 1999/2014 Signatory For TWE

This very spicy Highland Park is probably not everybody’s darling. But the combination of a very creamy mouthfeel with strong pepper works surprisingly well for me. – Rating: 84/100

Glen Grant 14 yo 1997 SMWS 9.66

Especially with water, this malt is very complex, the mix of spicy, herbal and light floral notes is intriguing. – Rating: 86/100

Clynelish 14 yo 1997/2012 Single Cask Collection

December 21, 2012

This is a typical example of a straightforward young Clynelish, everything is in its place, nicely sippable and no suprises in eiter direction. – Rating: 82/100

Benrinnes 14 yo 1998/2012 Master of Malt

Excellent! This is a monumental dram and a real treat for all who like that meaty and richly sherried style. – Rating: 89/100

Fettercairn 1996/2011 Signatory

May 17, 2012

Not overly complex but perfectly balanced, simply a straightforward young-ish bourbon cask whisky how it should be. – Rating: 86/100

Glenlivet 1996/2011 Signatory

April 16, 2012

If it wasn’t for that somewhat weakish finish, I would call this a great sherried dram. – Rating: 84/100

Drop Of The Irish 1996/2011

April 2, 2012

A very smooth and elegant dram, even at cask strength. The flavours are quite nice but a lacklustre finish drags it down a little – Rating: 78/100

Caol Ila 1995/2010 James MacArthur

March 15, 2012

The mild sherry influence adds a nice fruity and sweet twist to this Caol Ila. Water is not really needed here. – Rating: 86/100

Wemyss Vanilla Summer 1997/2011

March 10, 2012

Sweet and fruity and very intense, this dram has divided the jurors at the MM Awards. Some think it’s over the top. I love it. – Rating: 92/100

Head To Head – Two Longmorns – 35 Years Apart

February 15, 2012

At the Munich Finest Spirits Festival 2012 I had the chance to get two interesting Longmorn samples at the stand of slowdrink.de. One 12 and on 14 year old, but from two entirely different ages. Let’s see how they compare:

Glenkinchie Distillers Edition 1996/2010

February 9, 2012

This malt has a lovely nose and some interesting flavours on the palate. But overall it is missing a little depth. – Rating: 80/100

Aberfeldy 1997/2011 Single Cask

January 13, 2012

A very fine richly sherried malt, sweetness and spice are in good balance but it could have a little more depth. – Rating: 86/100

Aberlour 14 yo Duncan Taylor NC2

December 13, 2011

The very fresh and enjoyable nose is countered by a rather disappointing palate. The finish is not very convincing either. Not the best casks went into this bottling. – Rating: 73/100

Dalmore 1996/2011 Master of Malt

September 2, 2011
Thumbnail image for Dalmore 1996/2011 Master of Malt

Unfortunately, the refill cask could not give this malt the richness we have come to expect from a Dalmore. There are some nice flavours, but they are a little too subtle for my taste. – Rating: 76/100

Balvenie 14 yo Golden Cask

August 26, 2011

This really needs some water to fully open up. Then it turns from a rather generic dram into a pleasant experience. – Rating: 84/100

Inchgower 14 yo Flora & Fauna

April 16, 2011

This malt needs some time to open up. It has rather subtle aromas, actually a little too subtle for my taste. – Rating: 78/100

Longrow 14 yo Sherry Cask Finish

April 7, 2011
Thumbnail image for Longrow 14 yo Sherry Cask Finish

The sherry has mellowed out the peatiness of the Longrow a bit. The result is a stunning and well-balanced dram that perfectly combines fruitiness with smoke. – Rating: 89/100

Glenesk 1982/1997 Cadenhead’s

March 25, 2011

A very spicy malt with an impressive nose. But on the palate there seems to something missing to balance out the spiciness. – Rating: 81/100
