Bowmore 2000/2010 James MacArthur

January 29, 2011

Despite its pale colour this malt is pretty complex but also rather gentle. A few drops of water release even more flavours. Unusually “clean” for a Bowmore. – Rating: 83/100

Comparing Two Macallan 10 yo Cask Strength

The Macallan 10 yo CS is not easy to come by these days and you have to be prepared to pay significantly more than for the standard sherried 10 yo. Yet I was fortunate enough to secure 2 samples of different batches.

Balblair 2000

November 10, 2010

A very pleasant light-bodied malt that does not brag with its qualities but delivers nonetheless. – Rating: 84/100

Glen Breton 10 yo Ice Wine Barrel

August 26, 2010

The unusual maturation in an ice wine barrel results in a gorgeous whisky that does not have to hide behind its cousins from Sctotland. With malts like that, this Canadian distillery can proudly bear the Glen in its name! – Rating: 86/100

Laphroaig 10 yo Cask Strength

July 14, 2010
Thumbnail image for Laphroaig 10 yo Cask Strength

The true essence of Islay. This uncompromising malt does not take prisoners. Extremely complex and much better than the regular 10 yo for an unbeatable price. – Rating: 91/100

Laphroaig 10 yo

July 2, 2010
Thumbnail image for Laphroaig 10 yo

One of the Islay classics, this competitively priced malt has an astonishing complexity. But the recent reduction of bottling strength from 43% to 40% didn’t do it a favour. – Rating: 84/100

Benriach Curiositas 10 yo

May 28, 2010
Thumbnail image for Benriach Curiositas 10 yo

A very nice peated Speysider, fruitier on the nose than on the palate. Quite complex and very enjoyable. – Score: 85/100

Springbank 10 yo

May 27, 2010
Thumbnail image for Springbank 10 yo

A great balance of flavours, accessible enough for an everyday dram but with a complexity that keeps it interesting for a long time. – Score: 86/100

Bowmore Tempest 10 yo

March 31, 2010
Thumbnail image for Bowmore Tempest 10 yo

It’s a very nice whisky, but it does not really remind me of a tempest. Although it is quite peaty for a Bowmore I think its character is more breezy than stormy, even without water. The fruitiest of all peat monsters. – Score: 86/100

Glenlossie 10 yo Flora & Fauna

March 25, 2010

Quite pleasant and complex and with a nice balance of flavours. But even at 43% it seems a bit watery. – Score: 84/100

Glenfarclas 10 yo

March 22, 2010
Thumbnail image for Glenfarclas 10 yo

Long, fruity and slightly spicy, fading into a suprising smokiness
Overall: A very nice inexpensive but yet intense sheried malt. – Score: 83/100

Loch Dhu 10 yo

March 15, 2010
Thumbnail image for Loch Dhu 10 yo

While the nose is not too unpleasant – albeit a bit wierd – the taste pulls it down enormously. It tastes more like herbal bitter as Fernet Branca than like a whisky. To put it short: Crap. – Score: 15/100

Allt-Á-Bhainne 1995/2006 James MacArthur

March 4, 2010

A very light-bodied malt, might be suitable as an aperitive but has not much to offer overall. Needs much water to overcome the sharpness of the spirit. – Score: 72/100

Longrow 10yo 100 Proof

March 3, 2010
Thumbnail image for Longrow 10yo 100 Proof

Most enjoyable and suprisingly little peat. In a blind test I might have guessed “Cask strength Hazelburn” because is has that typical spicy orange profile. – Score: 88/100

Bushmills Single Malt 10 yo

February 25, 2010
Thumbnail image for Bushmills Single Malt 10 yo

Smooth and very fruity, not very complex but quite enjoyable.- Score: 81/100

Benromach 10 yo

February 6, 2010
Thumbnail image for Benromach 10 yo

Surprisingly smoky, but well balanced with spices and a slight sweetness. It even reminds me a bit of some old-fashioned whiskies from silent stills. – Score: 84/100

Talisker 10 yo – old Map label

January 29, 2010

The old version has much more sherry influence than its modern brother. I wouldn’t say it’s better, but it is intriguingly different. – Score: 86/100

Macallan 10 yo

December 28, 2009
Thumbnail image for Macallan 10 yo

Great nose, palate is a bit weaker due to the bottling strength. But still a very nice basic sherry malt with good value for the money – Score: 82/100

Clynelish 10 yo James MacArthur

November 25, 2009

Very enjoyable with a good balance between sweetness and spice – Score: 87/100

Royal Lochnagar 1998/2009 Signatory

November 23, 2009
Thumbnail image for Royal Lochnagar 1998/2009 Signatory

A nice full bodied dram, quite spicy. Be careful with water, it makes it more edgy. – Score: 85/100
