Report of my visit to Auchentoshan Distillery

Bottlings

Auchentoshan Heartwood

May 17, 2013

Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan Heartwood

The fruit flavours taste a bit artificial and the finish is one of the shortest I have experienced in a single malt, but for the rather cheap price it is okay-ish and a step up from the Springwood. – Rating: 74/100

Auchentoshan Springwood

April 26, 2013

Quite immature but still smooth because of the triple distillation, a dram for moments when you wish to avoid flavourfulness. – Rating: 67/100

Auchentoshan 35 yo 1975 Bourbon Matured

March 3, 2013

Even afer 35 years the wood only contributes a nice spiciness without overpowering the fruit. – Rating: 88/100

Auchentoshan 1990 Silveroak

March 3, 2013

This malt has a very nice fruity and creamy base that is enhanced by rather strong wood spices. – Rating: 85/100

Auchentoshan 27 yo 1984/2012 Master of Malt

February 6, 2013

Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan 27 yo 1984/2012 Master of Malt

Very floral, but in a good way. There is a minimal soapiness to it but it is too faint to call it a flaw. Quite unusual. – Rating: 84/100

Auchentoshan 11 yo 1999 Bordeaux Matured

May 26, 2012

Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan 11 yo 1999 Bordeaux Matured

Even though it has been fully matured in wine casks, the Bordeaux does not overpower the whisky. Very smooth on the palate but also forceful at the same time. – Rating: 85/100

Auchentoshan 1998/2011 James MacArthur

March 15, 2012

Triple distillation and a refill cask make this an extremely subtle dram. You may well give it a try, if you like that ultra-light style, but this doesn’t cut it for me – Rating: 63/100

Auchentoshan 12 yo

February 3, 2011

Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan 12 yo

A smooth Lowland malt that is quite pleasant on the palate, but the finish is over much too soon. – Rating: 78/100

Auchentoshan Stillman’s Collection

June 4, 2010

Set of 3 miniatures only available at the distillery

Auchentoshan Select

August 6, 2009

The only good thing I can say about this expression is that it is discontinued. If you happen to find a bottle, avoid it! This is a perfect example of an NAS statement used to disguise immature whisky. – Score: 55/100

Auchentoshan 21 yo

July 26, 2009

Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan 21 yo

Very complex, you can find something different in every dram. But still not my favourite. – Score: 82/100

In the immediate surroundings of Glasgow there are two distilleries, Auchentoshan and Glengoyne. I already visited Auchentoshan last year, so it was more or less obvious that I would see Glengoyne now.

Auchentoshan Distillery Visit

June 3, 2010

After my week on Islay I spent three days in Glasgow. Glasgow? Wasn’t there a whisky distillery somewhere nearby? Actually I had passed it when the coach from Kennacraig came into Glasgow on the Great Western Road, not far from Erskine Bridge.

See you, Scotland!

May 14, 2010

A great ten days in Scotland have come to an end, and I am back home in Bavaria. My journey to Islay and Glasgow yielded lots of material for new articles and of course also some new bottles of whisky.
