Especially the nose is very madeira-like, the palate is both sweet and rather spicy. A very dominant finish that may be a bit too hefty for some, but I quite like it. – Rating: 82/100

A very rich stout, perhaps a bit too much on the bitter side for my taste but very flavour-intensive. You wouldn’t guess the whisky connection though because it blends very smoothly with the beer. – Rating: 82/100

This malt has lots of youthful bite but does not offer a great deal of interesting flavours. Bottled way too young for my taste. – Rating: 70/100

A very well done vatting of bourbon and sherry casks, richly flavoured and entirely enjoyable. – Rating: 86/100

Quite different from the Peacock, obviously more sherry casks were used for this edition. A good malt, but I prefer the fruitier character of the Peacock. – Rating: 83/100

Quite a nice dram, but doesn’t possess much to remember, nice to just sip away – Score: 78/100

Just before Christmas I was enjoying a celebratory dram or three with my old friend Keith Wood of Whisky-Emporium.com and as often happens after a few Drams and when the night draws in, we set about putting the world, or at least whisky world, to rights.

Laphroaig is the most southerly of the Islay distilleries, and it is just about 1.5 miles away from Port Ellen, so it can easily be reached on foot by a nice walk along the coastal road to Ardbeg.

Shockwaves went through the whisky world on January 25, as the Times published the outcome of a blind tasting of five whiskies that they had arranged. The results were stunning: the Taiwanese Kavalan nonchalantly beat three Scotches and an English whisky.
Please note that due to imperfections of the blog search function, all articles are shown that contain ARRAN also within a word (e.g. arrange). Sorry about that.
