Undisclosed/Bastard

Blackstone 18 yo

December 27, 2010

This is a typical “You get what you pay for” supermarket malt. It’s not really bad but the floral notes are much too dominant for an enjoyable older malt. – Rating: 74/100

Cu Dhub

December 14, 2010

The best thing you can say about this whisky is that it tastes of almost nothing. Which makes it different from Loch Dhu and – in a way – slightly more enjoyable. – Rating: 18/100

A well-balanced Islay malt with enjoyable fruit notes. Much has been guessed about its provenance, but I wouldn’t be surprised, if the name proved to be the strongest hint. – Rating: 85/100

Ileach Cask Strength

If you like Laphroaig, you will like this one too. A young and heavy peat bomb that takes no prisoners. But beware, the next batch just might come from somewhere else. And it’s not cheaper than the Laph 10 CS – Rating: 87/100

Westport 2000/2010 Malts of Scotland

A very rich first fill sherry malt that gives the impression of being older than ten. Very delightful at a very reasonable price. – Rating: 84/100

It’s hard to pin it down, but I am not utterly convinced by this old version of the Smokehead. The nose is great, but on the palate the different flavours feel more like unconnected bits and pieces instead of being a harmonic ensemble. Given the high price tag, I am mildly disappointed. – Rating: 83/100

Adelphi Laudale 12 yo

February 1, 2010

This is an exceptionally rich and dark sherry whisky, quite dry but not disturbingly so. Very complex and thoroughly enjoyable. – Score: 88/100

Adelphi Breath of Speyside 1991/2009

October 1, 2009

Promising nose but the bitterness takes away much of the pleasure. A few years too long in the cask? – Score: 78/100

Adelphi Breath of Islay 1992/2008

September 29, 2009

This is a true spice bomb. but not of the usual “wood spice” type that can get too overpowering at times. Balanced out by a slight sweetness. Almost no fruity aromas to be found here. – Score: 87/100
