Master Of Malt 60 yo Speyside

March 7, 2014

Many layers of flavours can be explored in this wonderful whisky. Wood is always present but it never gets in the way of the tropical fruits that act as base flavours. – Rating: 93/100

Compass Box Canto Cask 48

The wood really weighs down heavily on this dram, on the verge of totally overpowering the spirit. It provesthat wood exctraction done right can define a modern whisky more than distillery house style. – Rating: 86/100

Northern Islay 20 yo 1990/2011 L’Esprit

Wonderful aromas on the nose are paired with a robust palate. The wood flavours are well integrated with the sherry fruit. – Rating: 87/100

Blairfindy 27 yo 1984/2011 Blackadder

April 21, 2013

Quite an enjoyable dram that shows its age with a certain driness. Altogether it is nothing really special, though. – Rating: 85/100

“Lochranza” 16 yo 1996/2012 Blackadder

April 12, 2013

A smooth nose and a rather punchy but fruity palate make this undisclosed malt (probably from the Isle of Arran) a pleasant sipping experience. – Rating: 86/100

Port Askaig 30 yo Cask Strength

February 26, 2013
Thumbnail image for Port Askaig 30 yo Cask Strength

Some very pleasant fruit notes are playing with the peat here. The mouthfeel is unusally creamy for a peated malt. – Rating: 87/100

Port Askaig 19 yo Cask Strength

February 26, 2013

Quite a dry dram with a light bitterness on the palate. The finish is a bit timid. – Rating: 84/100

Port Askaig 12 yo

February 25, 2013

There is an element of dirtiness in this whisky that adds a wickedly intriguing dimension. The spices in this are delightful. – Rating: 87/100

Grand Castle 18 yo

A shy sherry monster, the powerful nose is followed by a fairly modest palate and finish. Very nice aromas but it is over too soon. – Rating: 84/100

Blackadder Peat Reek 13 yo

January 4, 2013

This whisky is aptly named. It’s all about peat here, mainly on the nose but also on the palate. The other aromas only act as ‘garnish’ but this works surprsingly well. – Rating: 86/100

Smoking Islay Cask 2012/436

December 23, 2012
Thumbnail image for Smoking Islay Cask 2012/436

This dram is very generic and one-dimenensional, I cannot find much of interest here. – Rating: 67/100

Master of Malt 30 yo Speyside 5th Edition

December 4, 2012

Unusual apple aromas can be found in this sherried dram, a very fine whisky indeed, with just enough wood influence to be noticeable. – Rating: 87/100

Ellenstown 10 yo

July 11, 2012

With the nose of a peat monster that takes no prisoners and a sweet but dry palate that is dominated by spices, this malt is not for the faint of heart. But delicious it is. – Rating: 86/100

Smoking Islay 2000/2011 Blackadder

April 4, 2012

The medicinal character of this most delightful malt points to a location fairly close to Port Ellen. – Rating: 88/100

Wemyss Whispering Smoke 1981/2011

March 15, 2012

On the palate the smoke is a bit louder than a whisper, but this really is a very enjoyable island style malt. – Rating: 87/100

Wemyss Vanilla Summer 1997/2011

March 10, 2012

Sweet and fruity and very intense, this dram has divided the jurors at the MM Awards. Some think it’s over the top. I love it. – Rating: 92/100

Speyside 40 yo Master of Malt

February 8, 2012

A great sherry whisky with a gentle cask influence that does not disturb flavours. At this quality level the low botling strength is excusable. – Rating: 88/100

Master of Malt 30 yo Speyside 4th Edition

December 3, 2011
Thumbnail image for Master of Malt 30 yo Speyside 4th Edition

A very nice sherry dram indeed, offering a lot of flavours to hunt down. The bottlers could have been a bit more generous with the ABV, though. – Rating: 87/100

Classic of Islay 2009

October 3, 2011

With a few drops of water this malt literally explodes into flavours. This outburst on the palate is backed up by a massive nose. – Rating: 89/100
