Glenfarclas Coronation 1953/2013 Speciality Drinks

An amazing very old Glenfarclas with a fantastic fruitiness underlined by aromatic spices. It has a bit of a wood bite but this does not detract from the glorious aromas that can be found in this whisky. – Rating: 94/100

anCnoc 22 yo

It still has the lightness Knockdhu is known for, but the long time in the casks have also given it a nice richness not seen in their younger bottlings. – Rating: 86/100

Bruichladdich The Laddie Sixteen

September 8, 2013
Thumbnail image for Bruichladdich The Laddie Sixteen

Enormously creamy with the typical Bruichladdich fruitiness, this dram may not be the most complex of all, but it is immensely sippable. – Rating: 87/100

Tomatin Cù Bòcan

September 6, 2013
Thumbnail image for Tomatin Cù Bòcan

This is only peated at 15ppm but it feels stronger, especially with a few drops of water. There’s a bit of a trade-off with the trademark Tomatin tropical fruit, but it’s quite a nice dram overall. – Rating: 81/100

Compass Box Canto Cask 48

September 3, 2013
Thumbnail image for Compass Box Canto Cask 48

The wood really weighs down heavily on this dram, on the verge of totally overpowering the spirit. It provesthat wood exctraction done right can define a modern whisky more than distillery house style. – Rating: 86/100

Macduff 15 yo Vom Fass

August 23, 2013

This rather inexpensive dram is actually quite tasty, a typical bourbon cask whisky already showing some fine maturity. – Rating: 84/100

Finally I have the chance to review three of the four new NAS Macallans in a side-by-side comparison.

Balvenie Doublewood 17 yo

August 15, 2013
Thumbnail image for Balvenie Doublewood 17 yo

While having a superb nose, this older Doublewood version does not quite reach the quality of the almost legendary 12 year old. But go for it, if you like spicy drams. – Rating: 85/100

Auchentoshan Three Wood

August 9, 2013
Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan Three Wood

The sweetness of this dram is almost too heavy, but the wood spices keep it in balance. The nose is very nice, the finish a bit short. – Rating: 82/100

Balvenie Tun 1858 Batch 1

July 7, 2013
Thumbnail image for Balvenie Tun 1858 Batch 1

One of the finest noses I have ever smelled, and the palate is almost on the same level. It is not really a sherry bomb, the whisky part is just as prominent. Not exactly cheap, though. – Rating: 92/100

Highland Park 1997 Viking Collection “The Sword”

July 3, 2013
Thumbnail image for Highland Park 1997 Viking Collection “The Sword”

An outstanding and very typical Highland Park, the balance of flavours is just perfect. Too bad it was not bottled at cask strength. – Rating: 90/100

Tamdhu 27 yo 1984/2011 Exclusive Malts

June 23, 2013
Thumbnail image for Tamdhu 27 yo 1984/2011 Exclusive Malts

The strong fruit aromas are typical for Tamdhu and make this a very pleasant and sippable dram. – Rating: 84/100

A wonderful dram with the wood kept in balance by the lovely fruit and spice aromas. The nose is to die for. – Rating: 91/100

Laphroaig 1996/2012 Malts of Scotland

June 13, 2013
Thumbnail image for Laphroaig 1996/2012 Malts of Scotland

It needs some time to build up and benefits from a good splash of water, this fantastic whisky has the perfect balance of sherry and peat, maturity and freshness. – Rating: 94/100

Laphroaig 15 yo 1996/2012 Signatory

June 10, 2013
Thumbnail image for Laphroaig 15 yo 1996/2012 Signatory

Not the phenolic bomb you might expect from Laphroaig, this dram is quite crisp and clean with a nice light fruitiness. – Rating: 88/100

Edradour Ballechin 7th Release

June 9, 2013
Thumbnail image for Edradour Ballechin 7th Release

Edradour is infamous for wine cask experiments with very mixed outcome, but this peated expression hits the spot. – Rating: 83/100

Tormore 1988/2012 Malts of Scotland

June 7, 2013
Thumbnail image for Tormore 1988/2012 Malts of Scotland

While the nose is sublime, palate and finish feel a bit weaker, but all on a fairly high level to be fair. – Rating: 86/100

Glenlochy 31 yo 1980/2012 Signatory

June 7, 2013
Thumbnail image for Glenlochy 31 yo 1980/2012 Signatory

The slightly waxy mouthfeel works very well together with a classic and well-balanced flavour profile. – Rating: 87/100

Edradour 8 yo 2003/2012 Ruby Port

June 5, 2013
Thumbnail image for Edradour 8 yo 2003/2012 Ruby Port

The tasting notes may read worse than the whisky actually is, but this is just too immature and drowned by the wine. – Rating: 77/100

Edradour 18 yo 1993/2012

June 3, 2013
Thumbnail image for Edradour 18 yo 1993/2012

A very nice richly sherried expression with many interesting flavours albeit falling behind a bit in the finish. – Rating: 86/100
