Thumbnail image for Tobermory 19 yo 1994/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

Very strong wood aromas from toasted over aromatic to hot and spicy dominate this excellent whisky, any more and it would be too much. This was bottled just in time. – Rating: 87/100

Glenrothes 23 yo 1990/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

Thumbnail image for Glenrothes 23 yo 1990/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

Very enjoyable. If you believe in whisky regions, this would be your typical unsherried Speysider. Not the most complex of malts, but the balance of fruit, sweetness and spice is just right. – Rating: 86/100

Springbank 2000/2012 Calvados Wood

May 22, 2014
Thumbnail image for Springbank 2000/2012 Calvados Wood

The apple flavours are a perfect match for the briny Springbank house style. Even though the whisky has matured in Calvados casks for 6 years, the distillery character is not overpowered in any way. – Rating: 87/100

Two very good whiskies with strong sherry aromas. Rating: 89/100 and 86/100

Daftmill, ca. 7 yo

May 18, 2014

The style is very light and the young age of this is quite obvious. It shows promise but the slight bitter note is a bit disturbing. – Rating: 77/100

Clynelish 16 yo Darkness! Oloroso Finish

May 15, 2014
Thumbnail image for Clynelish 16 yo Darkness! Oloroso Finish

Very thick, almost chewy, this whisky has a slightly savoury touch. The sherry is strong in this one, as are the spices. – Rating: 84/100

Macallan 15 yo Darkness! PX Finish

May 14, 2014
Thumbnail image for Macallan 15 yo Darkness! PX Finish

Not really dark at all, but a very nice whisky. The nutty aromas work welll with the sherry fruit, water increases the spiciness. – Rating: 86/100

Kinclaith 16 yo 1966 Gordon & MacPhail

The nose is extremely pleasant and promises a wonderful palate, but the strong soapy flavours completely ruin the experience. – Rating: 62/100

Tasting notes for and thoughts on the new “educational” range

Bowmore Small Batch With Matching Montezuma Chocolate

April 22, 2014
Thumbnail image for Bowmore Small Batch With Matching Montezuma Chocolate

A young entry level malt in the trademark fruity and mildly peated Bowmore style, it makes for a pleasant sipping but does not provide the complexity found in the older expressions. – Rating: 83/100

Arran 10 yo – Revisited

April 21, 2014
Thumbnail image for Arran 10 yo – Revisited

Definitely an improvement over the older version. It has full flavours and a strong body, the spices are quite prominent, though. Needs a bit of water. – Rating: 85/100

Teacher’s Origin

April 14, 2014

There must be quite a bit of Ardmore in this rather voluptuous blend, the smokiness is well complemented by fruity caramel notes. – Rating: 83/100

Glenmorangie Astar

April 9, 2014
Thumbnail image for Glenmorangie Astar

This whisky is most unusual but I really like it. The mushroomy character is actually quite intriguing and the bottling strength of 100 Imperial proof gives it a nice punch. – Rating: 86/100

The Lost Distilleries Blend – Batch 4

March 28, 2014
Thumbnail image for The Lost Distilleries Blend – Batch 4

Nose and palate of this delicate dram are quite different but complement each other very well. The overall character is light and delicate with very little smoke. – Rating: 87/100

International Whisky Day Special – A Bunch Of Dusty Scotch Blends

I was planning on doing a comparative tasting anyway, so I thought it would be a nice idea to reserve this slightly special flight for this occasion.

Caol Ila 18 yo 1995/2013 The Whisky Agency

March 25, 2014
Thumbnail image for Caol Ila 18 yo 1995/2013 The Whisky Agency

There is a minimal whiff of sulphur on the nose but I am sure this is from the peating process. The whisky is quite edgy and not as complex and rounded as other Caol Ilas of this age. – Rating: 83/100

Clynelish 17 yo 1996/2013 Villa Konthor

March 24, 2014
Thumbnail image for Clynelish 17 yo 1996/2013 Villa Konthor

This dram has a remarkable density of flavours. It is very good but you should not be too sensitive to wood spice. – Rating: 87/100

Ainslie’s Royal Edinburgh

March 14, 2014
Thumbnail image for Ainslie’s Royal Edinburgh

This reminds me a little of the White Horse I recently tried but it is not quite as medicinal and more “rounded”. The peatiness is unlike anything on the market today. Only the finish lacks some persistance. – Rating: 86/100
