This malt still shows its youth, but it is far from being unenjoyable. Give it a few more years and it should be terrific. – Rating: 81/100

Laphroaig 1998/2010 The Whisky Cask

November 26, 2011

I can only describe this malt as very crisp. It is not overly complex but it leaves no doubt that it is a very fine young Laphroaig, focussing on the essentials. – Rating: 87/100

Simply an excellent bottling. The sherry influence adds yet another layer of flavours to the already very rich Ardbeg spirit. – Rating: 92/100

Bunnahabhain Darach Ur Batch 6

There is a Compass Box whisky called Spice Tree, but this one can safely be called ‘Spice Monster’. Its general character is rather mild, but the flavours are very strong. – Rating: 87/100

Bruichladdich First Growth Cuvée B

A really nice wine finish here, the cheese note is barely noticeable but adds an interesting dimension to an already very flavourful dram. – Rating: 84/100

Laphroaig 1998/2011 Malts of Scotland

September 29, 2011

This Laphroaig is a bit on the sweet side which complements the smoke and spice very nicely. – Rating: 86/100

Port Ellen 1982/2011 Royal Wedding Reserve

An incredibly rich peated sherry monster, the savoury quality is stunning. There is much more going on in it than my puny tasting notes can describe. – Rating: 92/100

Laphroaig 12 yo 1996 The Whisky Society

Not really typical for the distillery, but this is a malt whisky which gets your fantasy rolling. The essence of Islay in a glass. Perfection. – Rating: 90/100

Bowmore 1999/2010 C&S Dram Collection

September 3, 2011

Without water this is a very untypical and somewhat strange Bowmore. But add a spash or two and it will transfrom into a nice albeit somewhat spicy dram. – Rating: 82/100

Caol Ila 12 yo 1997/2010 Chieftain’s

August 27, 2011

The nose requires water to reach full strength, the palate not necessarily. It is an excellent and rather ‘thick’ Caol Ila that feels a bit older than stated on the label. – Rating: 88/100

Bunnahabhain 1976/2008 Murray McDavid

August 11, 2011

This very complex malt displays some rather odd flavours which I really like, but it may not be everybody’s favourite. – Rating: 89/100

Bunnahabhain 1998/2011 Adelphi

August 10, 2011

A small dose of sulphur is spicing up this already very rich dram even more. It is extremely densely flavoured, but the quite prominent driness knocks a few points off the score. – Rating: 84/100

Bowmore 1990/2010 A. D. Rattray

July 31, 2011

Quite a dry dram, but very complex and extremely enjoyable. It is very smooth neat, there is not really a need to add much water. – Rating: 88/100

Laphroaig 1989/2009 Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask

July 19, 2011

This dram is living proof that combining peat and sherry can work very well. Strangely it feels slighty watery neat, but adding a little water gives it some more depth. – Rating: 89/100

Ardbeg Newmake

July 8, 2011

This is an excellent new spirit, very strongly flavoured but astonishingly smooth to drink even undiluted. It can take a lot of water, though. – Rating: 84/100

Laphroaig 1999/2010 Nectar Of The Daily Dram

July 5, 2011

The sherry cask adds a slight fruitiness to this Laphroaig that is in perfect balance with the trademark medicinal peat. Very delicious! – Rating: 91/100

Caol Ila 1991/2009 Single Malts of Scotland

An excellent Caol Ila whose sweetness is nicely complimented by a slightly dry spiciness. Some fruity notes are there but they stay in the background – Score: 90/100

Laphroaig 16 yo 1994 Cadenhead’s

May 26, 2011

This fine peated dram has got the typical Laphroaig tang, but it is not quite as flavour-laden as the standard distillery bottlings, probably because it does not seem to have been matured in a first fill cask. – Rating: 85/100

Ardbeg 1974/1993 Wilson & Morgan

May 14, 2011
Thumbnail image for Ardbeg 1974/1993 Wilson & Morgan

This is a very fine example of the legendary old Ardbegs, much more delicacy instead of today’s in-your-face peat. The tropical fruit aromas give it a very intriguing touch. – Rating: 89/100

Caol Ila Moch

April 13, 2011
Thumbnail image for Caol Ila Moch

This Caol Ila is more gentle than the standard 12 yo, but it is far from being bland and boring. It is a nice introduction to the world of peated whisky, but it is not easy to find in some markets. – Rating: 83/100
