Arran The Eagle

Very mild and gentle, almost timid, it really needs a few drops of water to open up a little. Probably the most delicate dram of the Icons of Arran series. – Rating: 82/100

Highland Park 1994/2012 C&S Dram Collection

May 14, 2012

This dram needs time to develop and a bit but not too much water. Everything is very gentle, not very approachable but quite pleasant after all. – Rating: 81/100

Highland Park 1978/2011 Douglas Laing

It could be a geat whisky, but the adstringent wood tannins are much too strong for my taste. But you will love this dram, if you like that. – Rating: 80/100

Scapa 16 yo

April 18, 2012

A decent enough standard dram with no real flaws, but palate and finish are a bit on the shy side. – Rating: 78/100

Tobermory 1995/2011 Aberdeen Distillers

April 8, 2012

The nose is actually pretty nice. You may consider to smell on this malt only. – Rating: 74/100

Highland Park 1988/2008 Villa Konthor

March 5, 2012

The peat is hardly noticeable here and overall this malt is on the sweet side. Quite nice but it should have been bottled at cask strength. – Rating: 82/100

Tobermory 15 yo

February 16, 2012
Thumbnail image for Tobermory 15 yo

For a sherry finish this malt is a bit feeble. The overall character is pretty nice but it could benefit from a little more oomph. – Rating: 74/100

Tobermory 10 yo

There is not much to find in this whisky. It is mostly sweet on the palate with a light fruitiness, the nose is disappointing. – Rating: 65/100

Talisker 30 yo 2010 Bottling

January 29, 2012
Thumbnail image for Talisker 30 yo 2010 Bottling

The spices are a litte too dominant to let the fruity elements truly shine here. – Rating: 86/100

Ledaig 9yo 2001/2011 Whisky Doris

January 9, 2012

The flavour profile of this malt is a little generic, but evertything is harmonizing very well. – Rating: 87/100

Ledaig 2005/2010 Berry Bros.

August 31, 2011

Fast maturation does not only happen in tropical climates. With the right cask even a Scotch can become a cracker of a dram in only four years. This whisky is a peaty flavour bomb. – Rating: 88/100

Highland Park 1997 Vintage 12 yo

August 29, 2011

Not the greatest of the distillery range, but certainly an interesting expression. The spice bite is a bit too strong to really please me. – Rating: 77/100

Highland Park 25 yo

August 14, 2011
Thumbnail image for Highland Park 25 yo

The 18 year old is already a masterpiece, but this is yet a little better. Lots and lots of aromas to contemplate about, but the price difference is significant. – Rating: 91/100

Ledaig 10 yo

Well, it’s certainly an interesting whisky, but this combination of flavours does not really convince me. – Rating: 74/100

Highland Park 1992/2010 Silver Seal

June 10, 2011

Because of the unusually strong sherry influence you would never guess this very fine malt to be a Highland Park in a blind tasting. – Score: 85/100

Arran Madeira Cask

April 6, 2011
Thumbnail image for Arran Madeira Cask

Especially the nose is very madeira-like, the palate is both sweet and rather spicy. A very dominant finish that may be a bit too hefty for some, but I quite like it. – Rating: 82/100

Highland Park 1996/2010 Glasgow’s Whisky Festival

March 18, 2011

This rich and flavoursome malt has that waxy character you’d usually expect from a much older malt. The peat is there but only in the background. – Rating: 86/100

Highland Park 1997/2010 Master of Malt

March 12, 2011
Thumbnail image for Highland Park 1997/2010 Master of Malt

Quite a nice dram that needs a little attention. It has a rather pleasant taste but it appears more like a toned down Islay malt than a proper Highland Park. – Rating: 83/100

Highland Park St. Magnus 12 yo

March 11, 2011
Thumbnail image for Highland Park St. Magnus 12 yo

A slightly unusual expression from Highland Park, rather gentle but yet very complex. It is not overly sweet but it has the character of a very elaborate liquid dessert. – Rating: 87/100

Talisker – The Ageless Distillery

February 21, 2011

Distillery manager Charlie Smith in person hosted a masterclass at the Munich festival. I was delighted to see that their two top bottlings (25yo and 30yo) were poured, along with the 12yo FOCM bottling and the 18yo.
