Glengoyne 1990/2007 Cask 1523

March 5, 2012

A rich and full dram from a rather unusal amontillado cask. Some savoury flavours add another dimension. – Rating: 86/100

Tomatin 1976/2011 The Whisky Agency

February 29, 2012

A nice fruity dram that feels a bit younger than its real age, some water does not hurt it. – Rating: 83/100

Deanston Virgin Oak

In a way this is Burn Stewart’s Highland equivalent of the Bunnahabhain Darach Ur. It’s not bad at all, but it does not have the richness of its cousin from Islay. Rating: 83/100

Deanston 12 yo

February 19, 2012

The relaunched Deanston is a rich and rather savoury dram. Some unusal flavours probably don’t make it a whisky for anybody, but I like it. – Rating: 84/100

Glenmorangie Artein 15 yo

February 12, 2012

Surprisingly gentle, to the verge of feeling watery. The whisky steps into the background here. But it’s a nice dram, not more, not less. – Rating: 83/100

Oban 18 yo Limited Edition

February 10, 2012

A very pleasant mix of flavours with that ‘coastal’ touch that is so hard to pin down…. – Rating: 85/100

Singleton of Glen Ord 12 yo

February 5, 2012

Some very nice flavours are hidden in this malt, especially the well-integrated barrel char, but the mouthfeel is a bit watery. – Rating: 81/100

Clynelish Distillers Edition 1993

Quite a nice dram overall, but there seems to be missing something. – Rating: 80/100

Brora 30 yo 8th Release 2010

Some quite intersting herbal notes can be found in this malt. Nose and finish are fantastic, but it could be a little fuller on the palate. – Rating: 86/100

Tomatin 30 yo

January 21, 2012

This excellent malt does not really show its age. It is perfectly balanced with a rich taste and creamy mouthfeel. – Rating: 88/100

Tomatin Decades

Containing malts from five decades this is a very fine fruity dram with an elegant driness. The nose is terrific, the palate is a little weaker. – Rating: 85/100

Aberfeldy 1997/2011 Single Cask

January 13, 2012

A very fine richly sherried malt, sweetness and spice are in good balance but it could have a little more depth. – Rating: 86/100

Lochside 46 yo 1964 Single Blend TWE

The perfect fruit bomb. Fabulous, simply fabulous. This is my favourite dram of 2011. – Rating: 94/100

Clynelish 28 yo 1982 Single Malts of Scotland

Thoroughly enjoyable, both fresh and youthful as well as old and refined; this Clynelish is a very fine and typical aged expression of this distillery. – Rating: 88/100

Glen Garioch 40 yo 1971 for TWE

A great old-fashioned dram with a surprising amount of peat smoke. Very, smooth, gentle and perfectly balanced. They don’t make them like this anymore… – Rating: 92/100

Glenrothes 1998/2009 Murray McDavid

December 19, 2011

Not quite as sweet as one would expect from a sweet wine finish, this is quite an enjoyable dram. A nice amount of spice complements the fruity flavours. – Rating: 85/100

Glenlochy 1974/1987 Sestante

December 14, 2011

This is strong stuff, and the addition of water is recommended. It offers quite a lot of nice flavours but is a bit too spicy for my taste. – Rating: 82/100

Glengoyne 1973/2010 Malts of Scotland

December 9, 2011

Rich and creamy, sweet and fruity, and a little spicy: There is a lot to discover in this excellent old malt. – Rating: 89/100

Tomatin 1976/2011 The Nectar of the Daily Dram

November 28, 2011

A very enjoyable old dram, the age shows in the finesse of its aromas and not so much in the wood influence. – Rating: 87/100

Clynelish 1997/2008 Gordon & Macphail

The general taste of this whisky is very nice indeed, but there is a spirty edge to it that takes away some of the pleasure.
