Don’t be fooled by the light colour, this excellent grain whisky is very flavour-intensive but still has a light character. – Rating: 87/100

Caledonian 1964/2012 Scott’s Selection

A rather typical old grain whisky from a hard to find distillery, but the wood is already quite pronounced so it feels a bit rougher on the palate than other oldies I have tasted. – Rating: 86/100

North British 50 yo 1962/2012 Adelphi

While the nose of this old grain is truly delightful, it fails to fully satisfy on the palate. The sweetness is quite dominant, though the wood is kept under control. – Rating: 83/100

A sherried grain whisky is always something special. This one has very strong wood notes, but in combination with the strong grain profile it works remarkably well. – Rating: 88/100

Garnheath 43 yo 1967/2010 Clan Denny

March 2, 2013

A very hard to find distillery, and what a fruit bomb this is. The wood has taken over a little too much for a 90+ score. – Rating: 88/100

Invergordon 18 yo 1993 SMWS G5.4

The fresh oak cask gives this maize-based grain whisky a striking resemblance to bourbon. The delicious flavours are supported by strong wood spices – Rating: 87/100

If you get past the initial herbal punch, a lovely mix of fruit, sweetness and spice pleases your palate. – Rating: 87/100

North of Scotland 1973/2012 Berry Bros.

November 24, 2012

This has a wonderful trademark aged grain nose, but on the palate the wood takes the lead a little too much. – Rating: 83/100

Invergordon 18 yo 1993/2011 SMWS G5.3

August 23, 2012

For a change the SMWS tag line is not bursting of creativity, but it is spot on. The palate feels like an amplified version of the nose, the quality is unusually high for a grain whisky of this medium age. – Rating: 90/100

Alloa 1964/2008 Alambic Classique

A big single grain from the days when they still made it from maize. This gives it a touch of bourbon but with an overwhelming fruitiness and less wood despite its high age. – Rating: 90/100

Dumbarton 46 yo 1964 Clan Denny

April 12, 2012

Really a typical old grain whsky, showing off lots of fruity, sweet and spicy flavours. The caramel/peach mix is delightful but it also has a sharp edge. – Rating: 87/100

Dumbarton 1986/2011 Scott’s Selection

March 27, 2012

Quite a nice single grain overall but the palate does not quite manage to match the quality of the nose . – Rating: 84/100

Port Dundas 1991/2011 Whisky & Rhum

March 26, 2012

A medium aged single grain with some rather nice flavours, but the mouthfeel is a bit thin and the finish is quite short. – Rating: 76/100

North British 17 yo 1991 Signatory

September 14, 2011

There is almost no fruitiness in this grain whisky, but it is a very nice dram, gentle and smooth, but yet flavourful. – Rating: 83/100

North British 1991/2011 Master of Malt

August 22, 2011

This single grain has a very nice flavour base, but be warned: It is rather spicy stuff. – Rating: 84/100

Port Dundas 1973/2010 Duncan Taylor

July 7, 2011

This is a rare specimen of a sherried single grain whisky. Unfortunately it has been matured a few years too long, otherwhise it could have been a real cracker. – Rating: 80/100

Girvan 1990/2010 Clan Denny

April 5, 2011

Even after twenty years in the cask, the grain whisky has retained some of its bite. The wood adds quite a bit of spiciness to that. Remarkably un-fruity for a grain but quite enjoyable. – Rating: 83/100

Compass Box Hedonism

Overall: An excellent grain whisky with an amazing congruence of nose and palate. It is rather light in character but has strong flavours nonetheless. – Rating: 85/100

North Of Scotland 36 yo 1972 Dream Drams

October 18, 2010

If you are not repelled by the somewhat chemical nose, you a rewarded with a rich and smooth fruity dram that is a pleasure to sip. Water is not advisable as it makes the dram rougher and does not help the nose either. – Rating: 86/100

Cambus 24 yo Bladnoch Forum

September 3, 2010

Even with water the nose is somewhat pungent but not unpleasant. Unlike the SMWS Port Dundas, the floral elements are not overwhelming the other flavour components. A well-balanced and nicely sippable single grain for a fair price. – Rating: 84/100
