Glenmorangie Astar

This whisky is most unusual but I really like it. The mushroomy character is actually quite intriguing and the bottling strength of 100 Imperial proof gives it a nice punch. – Rating: 86/100

The Lost Distilleries Blend – Batch 4

Nose and palate of this delicate dram are quite different but complement each other very well. The overall character is light and delicate with very little smoke. – Rating: 87/100

I was planning on doing a comparative tasting anyway, so I thought it would be a nice idea to reserve this slightly special flight for this occasion.

Caol Ila 18 yo 1995/2013 The Whisky Agency

There is a minimal whiff of sulphur on the nose but I am sure this is from the peating process. The whisky is quite edgy and not as complex and rounded as other Caol Ilas of this age. – Rating: 83/100

Clynelish 17 yo 1996/2013 Villa Konthor

This dram has a remarkable density of flavours. It is very good but you should not be too sensitive to wood spice. – Rating: 87/100

Bourbon Dusty Shootout: Early Times vs. Old Grand Dad

March 21, 2014

I got hold of a miniature of Early Times, probably from the late 1960s, and a full bottle of Old Grand Dad from the early 1970s. A perfect setup for a head to head tasting, if you ask me.

Ainslie’s Royal Edinburgh

This reminds me a little of the White Horse I recently tried but it is not quite as medicinal and more “rounded”. The peatiness is unlike anything on the market today. Only the finish lacks some persistance. – Rating: 86/100

Master Of Malt 60 yo Speyside

Many layers of flavours can be explored in this wonderful whisky. Wood is always present but it never gets in the way of the tropical fruits that act as base flavours. – Rating: 93/100

John Brown Whisky From Malta

Industrial spirit mixed with some vaguely whisky-ish flavourings is my best guess of what this might be. – Rating: 38/100

Highland Park Loki

Despite its age of 15 years, this whisky has retained a nice freshness that is complemented by softer and more mature flavours. – Rating: 87/100

Caledonian 1964/2012 Scott’s Selection

A rather typical old grain whisky from a hard to find distillery, but the wood is already quite pronounced so it feels a bit rougher on the palate than other oldies I have tasted. – Rating: 86/100

Puni Alba

Of course you can notice that this is a very young spirit, but the strong cask influence takes away some of the newmake character. It is not unpleasant at all, but indeed “Grain Eau de Vie” fits it much better than “Whisky” – Rating: 72/100

Preußischer Whisky 3 yo

February 19, 2014

Bold spicy flavours dominate this whisky. While you can notice it is not very old, the fresh wood does a good job in covering the signs of youth. It might be a controversial dram but I like it. – Rating: 83/100

Glenmorangie Companta

A well done wine finish that leaves enough room for the whisky to be noticed. It is quite smooth, maybe even a tad too much so. – Rating: 85/100

Scallywag

Young whisky can be excellent, especially with strong peat or sherry. But this dram is just naked with nothing to hide its immaturity. – Rating: 73/100

Tamdhu 10 yo

February 11, 2014

I have read many good reviews about this new Tamdhu standard bottling, but I cannot become friends with it. There is just too little in there to pick up. – Rating: 67/100

Redbreast 21 yo

The nose is almost a bit solventy, but on the palate there is a sweet fruity explosion. It might be difficult if not impossible to find a better representative of the Irish potstill style. – Rating: 90/100

Jim Beam Red Stag Black Cherry with Ginger & Lime

I don’t usually write in-depth whisky reviews, mainly because of time constrains but also the for reason that so many other bloggers do it. But the product I recently discovered in our local supermarket made me change my mind.

This is an excellent example how a good sherry cask can make a very young whisky shine. It has lots of power and lots of flavour. – Rating: 87/100
