Johnnie Walker “The Spice Road”

The promised spices are present, and the malt component is actually quite pleasant, but the palate is overwhelmed by the sugar coating of sweet young grain whisky. – Rating: 71/100

Anon 13 yo Batch 1 (Abbey Whisky)

Very interesting and complex with bold flavours, this has got quite a charater. Even though it is rather spicy, the overall balance is excellent. – Rating: 87/100

Cardhu 21 yo

Quite a pleasant dram with nice fruity flavours, but from an older whisky at this price (£175) I expect a little more. – Rating: 83/100

Ardbeg Supernova 2015

Surprisingly fruity and civilised despite the 100 ppm phenol level of the malted barley. This does not feel like a peat monster at all, the fruitiness almost makes you forget the peat. – Rating: 87/100

3 New Bruichladdich Micro Provenance Bottlings

I don’t usually participate in online whisky tastings on Twitter, but on rare occasions I’ll make an exception. Last week Bruichladdich presented three new bottlings from their Cask Evolution Exploration series and sent out samples for the tasting.

Laphroaig 16 yo 1998/2015 Signatory for TWE

Sherry cask Laphroaigs are hard to come by, and this reflects in the price. This is an excellent example that has a stronger peat punch than you would expect. – Rating: 90/100

Clynelish 18 yo 1996/2015 Signatory for TWE

August 29, 2015
Thumbnail image for Clynelish 18 yo 1996/2015 Signatory for TWE

Even though this is a refill cask the sherry influence is still quite strong. It’s a solid whisky but does not show very much of the Clynelish distillery character. – Rating: 85/100

Rittenhouse Single Barrel Rye 1984/2009

August 24, 2015

A wonderful old rye that is very wood-forward without being too much dominated by it. It still has a surprisingly gentle base. – Rating: 88/100

Brenne Estate Cask

August 13, 2015

This is made in alembic stills just like cocgnac. The sweet fruit is very dominant, to an extent that you might not recognize it as whisky in a blind tasting. It is nice, though. – Rating: 80/100

Millstone Rye Whisky 2007/2014 for Usquebaugh Society

August 12, 2015

Mind you, this is a good tasting whisky, but am not sure if it was the right decison to put it into the cask at 46% ABV. There is almost no reserve for adding water, and overall it is too mild for what I expect of a rye. It feels more like a bourbon at the lower end of the “high rye” spectrum. – Rating: 83/100

Glen Garioch 1990/2015 Usquebaugh Society

August 9, 2015

A richly flavoured Glen Garioch that is very typical of older expressions of this distillery. It is quite spicy but not overwhelmingly so. – Rating: 87/100

Elements of Islay Lp6

August 5, 2015

This is a bit fruitier then the official Cask Strength bottling but it still focuses on the strong medicinal distillery character. The website says “moreish”, and I agree. – Rating: 87/100

Elements of Islay Bw5

Tropical fruits galore are the backbone of this whisky, the peat is only in the background. This is excellent, if only the bottles were bigger… – Rating: 88/100

Glen Breton 14 yo

August 1, 2015

Sorry, but the soapy notes on the palate ruin the experience for me. Without them it would have been a light and delicate single malt. – Rating: 63/100

Cleveland Whiskey 100 Proof

July 29, 2015

Another failed experiment to speed up maturation. It does not really taste bad upfront, but it leaves an unpleasant blandness on your palate. – Rating: 58/100

Glenlivet 33 yo 1981/2015 Signatory for TWE

July 25, 2015
Thumbnail image for Glenlivet 33 yo 1981/2015 Signatory for TWE

The pleasantly fruity sherry aromas have a hard time fighting a multitude of wood spices. A whisky for oak lovers. – Rating: 83/100

Hibiki Japanese Harmony

Grainy sweetness dominates this blend. The fruity and floral notes are in balance but the spiciness feels very youthful. The nose is much better than the palate. – Rating: 79/100

Vintage Rye 23 yo

June 15, 2015
Thumbnail image for Vintage Rye 23 yo

A very powerful old rye whose palate has already been conquered by the wood. The nose is magnificent, though. The complexity of the spice aromas is fascinating – Rating: 87/100

Laphroaig 10 yo Cask Strength Batch 007

June 5, 2015
Thumbnail image for Laphroaig 10 yo Cask Strength Batch 007

After my recent disappointment with the current regular 10 yo I am happy to report that Laphroaig is back to old (cask) strength here. It may not be the most complex of batches, but it perfectly captures what has gone missing in so many recent bottlings of this distillery – Rating: 88/100

Tamdhu 25 yo 1984/2010 Whisky Doris

May 26, 2015

A very good Tamdhu, creamy and fruity with just the perfect dose of wood spice. The mid-twenties are the sweet spot of this disillery, in my opinion. – Rating: 87/100
