This oldie has a very rich nose, but it is surprisingly light and fragrant on the palate. Only the price of almost £2000 is a wee bit steep. – Rating: 87/100

Black Bottle 2013 Release

October 28, 2013

This all-new old favourite has quite unusual flavours and it is not really noticeable that it is a blend. The profile in interesting but probably not everybody’s cup of tea. – Rating: 78/100

Fary Lochan Efterår Batch 1

The wood has done a good job in this new Danish whisky. The young age is well hidden and the flavours are intriguing. Thumbs up for quality, thumbs down for the prohibitive price of €200 for 50 cl. – Rating: 76/100

Bunnahabhain 23 yo 1989/2013 Abbey Whisky

With its light colour it looks weakish, but don’t be fooled. After opening up there is a burst of fruity and spicy flavors. Excellent. – Rating: 88/100

Caperdonich 17 yo 1995/2012 Abbey Whisky

September 22, 2013
Thumbnail image for Caperdonich 17 yo 1995/2012 Abbey Whisky

Full-bodied and creamy with a nice amount of spice, this already reminds of the famous 1972 vintage, but for quite a bit less money. – Rating: 86/100

Glenfarclas Coronation 1953/2013 Speciality Drinks

September 16, 2013

An amazing very old Glenfarclas with a fantastic fruitiness underlined by aromatic spices. It has a bit of a wood bite but this does not detract from the glorious aromas that can be found in this whisky. – Rating: 94/100

anCnoc 22 yo

It still has the lightness Knockdhu is known for, but the long time in the casks have also given it a nice richness not seen in their younger bottlings. – Rating: 86/100

Bruichladdich The Laddie Sixteen

September 8, 2013

Enormously creamy with the typical Bruichladdich fruitiness, this dram may not be the most complex of all, but it is immensely sippable. – Rating: 87/100

Tomatin Cù Bòcan

September 6, 2013
Thumbnail image for Tomatin Cù Bòcan

This is only peated at 15ppm but it feels stronger, especially with a few drops of water. There’s a bit of a trade-off with the trademark Tomatin tropical fruit, but it’s quite a nice dram overall. – Rating: 81/100

Tullamore Dew 12 yo

September 5, 2013
Thumbnail image for Tullamore Dew 12 yo

Unusually sweet and with a syrupy mouthfeel, this is not really what you would expect from an Irish blend. Fortunately the sweetness is backed by a healthy dose of spice. – Rating: 82/100

Compass Box Canto Cask 48

September 3, 2013

The wood really weighs down heavily on this dram, on the verge of totally overpowering the spirit. It provesthat wood exctraction done right can define a modern whisky more than distillery house style. – Rating: 86/100

Balcones Texas Single Malt Batch SM 8-12

August 28, 2013
Thumbnail image for Balcones Texas Single Malt Batch SM 8-12

Quite an unusual flavour profile here with strong emphasis on wood (in a good way). It’s a very nice whisky overall, apart from the slightly shortish finish . – Rating: 84/100

Mackmyra Moment Källa

Another interesting dram from Sweden which is quite strong on nose and palate, but the finish is just too short and trivial. – Rating: 78/100

Macduff 15 yo Vom Fass

August 23, 2013

This rather inexpensive dram is actually quite tasty, a typical bourbon cask whisky already showing some fine maturity. – Rating: 84/100

Finally I have the chance to review three of the four new NAS Macallans in a side-by-side comparison.

Balvenie Doublewood 17 yo

August 15, 2013
Thumbnail image for Balvenie Doublewood 17 yo

While having a superb nose, this older Doublewood version does not quite reach the quality of the almost legendary 12 year old. But go for it, if you like spicy drams. – Rating: 85/100

Auchentoshan Three Wood

August 9, 2013
Thumbnail image for Auchentoshan Three Wood

The sweetness of this dram is almost too heavy, but the wood spices keep it in balance. The nose is very nice, the finish a bit short. – Rating: 82/100

Mackmyra Special 09 – Vildhallon

August 5, 2013
Thumbnail image for Mackmyra Special 09 – Vildhallon

While the lovely nose is easy to grasp, the palate is most unusual with no real prominent aromas. Everything here is rather fragrant but there is also a slightly bitter element. – Rating: 81/100

Bushmills Black Bush

A decent daily dram, not more and not less. It feels a bit more like a Scotch blend than an Irish. – Rating: 80/100

Balvenie Tun 1858 Batch 1

July 7, 2013
Thumbnail image for Balvenie Tun 1858 Batch 1

One of the finest noses I have ever smelled, and the palate is almost on the same level. It is not really a sherry bomb, the whisky part is just as prominent. Not exactly cheap, though. – Rating: 92/100
