Linkwood 28 yo 1985 Signatory for TWE

The flavours are very dense and compact here which makes it hard to single out specific ones. It is a lovely whisky, but it needs time to open up. – Rating: 87/100

Laphroaig Select

There really is not very much going on here, but I found the long aromatic finish very pleasant. – Rating: 82/100

Aultmore XO Douglas Laing Old Particular

The young age is quite obvious here, but the strong sherry does a good job in not letting this turn into an annoyance. – Rating: 84/100

Bowmore 15 yo 1999/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

October 16, 2014
Thumbnail image for Bowmore 15 yo 1999/2014 Single Malts Of Scotland

The typical Bowmore fruitiness is balanced by quite strong peat and spices here. Some water and time is need until it fully opens up. – Rating: 86/100

Glenmorangie The Taghta

October 15, 2014
Thumbnail image for Glenmorangie The Taghta

A most interesting whisky that is dominated by aromatic spices. Fruity aromas are present but remain in the background. Nice but not an easy-going sipper. – Rating: 86/100

Clynelish 1997/2014 Wemyss “Cayenne Cocoa Bean”

October 14, 2014
Thumbnail image for Clynelish 1997/2014 Wemyss “Cayenne Cocoa Bean”

For me it is more coco than cocoa, but anyway, this is a very sippable and typical Clynelish. At cask strength this would have been a true cracker. – Rating: 85/100

Glen Garioch 1989/2014 Wemyss, “Peaches and Cream”

A very nice whisky from the time they still had their own floor maltings at Glen Garioch. The hint of smoke goes very well with the creamy fruitiness – Rating: 86/100

Mortlach 25 yo

October 9, 2014
Thumbnail image for Mortlach 25 yo

Quite delicate for its age and would probably not be recognized as Mortlach in a blind tasting. It has an excellent balance of flavours but it is strangely subdued. – Rating: 87/100

Mortlach Rare Old

Indeed this is an entry level whisky. In a way it shows everything one might expect of a Mortlach but it does so in a rather shy manner. – Rating: 83/100

Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition

September 24, 2014

This beefed-up version of Cutty definitely is a big step up from the regular bottling. The sweet spiciness offers quite a few interesting flavours. – Rating: 82/100

Clynelish 10 yo Hedges & Butler

September 16, 2014
Thumbnail image for Clynelish 10 yo Hedges & Butler

The famous waxy mouthfeel of Clynelish is very prominent here, together with a slight woody driness. This is a very good alternative to the original 14 yo bottling. – Rating: 87/100

Kilchoman 5 yo 2009/2014 PX Finish Abbey Whisky Exclusive

September 12, 2014
Thumbnail image for Kilchoman 5 yo 2009/2014 PX Finish Abbey Whisky Exclusive

The density of flaovurs in this young whisky is amazing as is the strong influence of aromatic spices. The finish does not interfere with the spirit. This is a superb thick exlir where a little goes a long way. – Rating: 88/100

Puni Opus I

September 9, 2014

The marsala wine contributes a strong fruity sweetness which fights for attention with the peat. There is no winner. – Rating: 78/100

Caol Ila 38 yo 1976/2014 Malts of Scotland

August 31, 2014
Thumbnail image for Caol Ila 38 yo 1976/2014 Malts of Scotland

Despite its age this malt is still quite peaty. The lovely fruity aromas are much more obvious on the nose than on the palate. Very good but not quite outstanding. – Rating: 89/100

Ardbeg Supernova SN2014 Committee Release

August 28, 2014
Thumbnail image for Ardbeg Supernova SN2014 Committee Release

So far I have only tasted the 2009 version of the SN which stupefied me. This is much more civilzed but still very powerful stuff. There are enough other aromas present to prevent this from turning into a mere peat bomb. – Rating: 88/100

Glendronach 27 yo 1985/2013 Cask 1035

August 27, 2014

Quite a bold sherry monster but not as sweet as one might expect from a PX cask. The wood spices are already beginning to take control of the whisky. – Rating: 86/100

Two Rather Dusty Bourbons

August 26, 2014

A few days ago I tasted four American bottom shelf whiskies sent to me by fellow blogger Joshua Feldman. But the package he sent me did not only contain those.

Glendronach 9 yo 1987/1997 Signatory

Thumbnail image for Glendronach 9 yo 1987/1997 Signatory

The youth of this surprisingly smoky whisky from the late stages of the Paxarette age can be noticed, but still it has an amazing complexity for a 9 year old. – Rating: 88/100

The United States of America are currently suffering an unprecedented bourbon and craft whisky craze. But there is a type of American whisky that is almost unkown in Europe: American blends.
