Ardmore 22 yo 1993/2015 G&M for Whisky-Online

by Oliver Klimek on February 11, 2016

Refill bourbon barrel 5750 – 49.9%

My Tasting Notes:

Colour: Bright gold
Nose: Light wood smoke, bee’s wax, honey, hints of pineapple, vanilla, hints of camphor and pepper.
Palate: Fairly strong peat, very herbal upfront, then vanilla and honey with hints of mixed tinned fruit, candied ginger and a hint of pepper.
Finish: Long, herbal and slightly fruity.
Overall: The herbal peatiness makes for quite an unusual whisky style with the wood remaining very much in the background. It tastes quite odd on the first sip but it grows on you and greatly benefits from a splash of water.

Rating: 86/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$

When I initially read the review I was all “I should get me a bottle of this, this sounds awesome”.

Then I realized this fits about 80% of highland whisky at the moment, with active American oak driven flavors leading the way.

I understand this being tasty, but I imagine it’s not all that unique.

I would not say that at all. You can see from the colour that the cask was not very active, and the main character is herbal which is not your usual “oak driven” modern whisky.

I know I’m not the best person to jump in here. But when I selected this cask I chose it specifically because it was more distillate driven than wood driven. Compared to most modern whiskies, I’d say this leans decidedly more towards an old-style character.
