Whisky.com Was Sold for $3.1 Million

by Oliver Klimek on February 28, 2014

Back in January I reported the news that the whisky.com domain had been sold to German retailer The Whisky Store. Now the details of the deal have been made public by the seller.

In a very interesting and detailed article on dnjournal.com (“The Domain Industry News Magazine”) the previous owner Michael Castello told the story of his domain. He was the first person to register it back in 1995, so it cost him nothing.

An interesting detail Michael Castello reveals is that a German Professor had approached him several times in the late 1990s to sell the domain to him, but he was not willing to pay the prices asked. The first price asked and declined was $1000, by the way. The Professor in question was without much doubt Prof. Walter Schobert, a well-known German whisky expert who moved to Islay in 1999 and who was also a co-founder of the Islay Ales brewery.

UPDATE: According to the Wikipedia list of the most expensive domain names, whisky.com has the 18th highest price ever paid for an internet domain.

Back in 2007 whisky.com did _not_ meet the reserve on Sedo auction: http://sedo.com/auction/auction_history.php?auction_id=13884&partnerid=44384&tracked=&language=us

But went up to 220,000 USD.

It was worth waiting for. Every day.
