Balblair 1975/2012

by Oliver Klimek on January 20, 2014

My Tasting Notes:

Colour: Light gold
Nose: Banana, pineapple, hints of rose water, vanilla, candied ginger.
Palate: Banana and pineapple again, grapefruit zest, hints of tea, ginger, hints of nutmeg.
Finish: On the short side, fruity and slightly spicy
Overall: The rather short and almost trivial finish spoils for me what could have been a very fine and delicate single malt.

Rating: 83/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$

Tasted blind for the 2013 Malt Maniacs Awards where it won a bronze medal, re-tasted for notes.

Ahhhh Oliver, one of the few times you and I disagree. I found this dram to be top notch from start to finish. Delicate is the key word. I wouldn’t expect the finish to be heavy, spiced or lingering. It was truly a sublime dram for me. If I had the money, I would buy it. Just one of those whiskies that blew me away for 2013.

If you look at the indivudual scores in the MM Awards you can see the judges were divided on this too. Some gave it 88, and some were not very excited about it. And I didn’t even have the lowest score. It really has some excellent elements, but somewhow it just fizzles out.

I’m with you Whisky Lassie. I sampled this at Whisky Fringe 2012 and again at Whisky Fest last year (a large pour, thanks Mark!). Obviously that’s not the best environment to assess the finish but it was one of my favourite whiskies over the last two years.

The new 83 is less subtle!
