Fettercairn 1996/2011 Signatory

May 17, 2012

Not overly complex but perfectly balanced, simply a straightforward young-ish bourbon cask whisky how it should be. – Rating: 86/100

Simply magnificent. Most of these bottles are offered to investors. But anyone buying this bottle to increase their wealth by a few bucks misses out on a once-in-a-liftetime opportunity. If you can afford this whisky, please drink it! – Rating: 95/100

Jim Beam Devil’s Cut

Rather strong flavours in this special bourbon, but there is a bitterness that puts me off somewhat. The finish is a bit weak as well. – Rating: 73/100

Allt-á-Bhainne 1995/2012 C&S Dram Collection

May 14, 2012
Thumbnail image for Allt-á-Bhainne 1995/2012 C&S Dram Collection

A very nice light ‘summer dram’, quite enjoyable overall, but the dilemma is: water enhances the nose but weakens the palate. – Rating: 82/100

Highland Park 1994/2012 C&S Dram Collection

May 14, 2012

This dram needs time to develop and a bit but not too much water. Everything is very gentle, not very approachable but quite pleasant after all. – Rating: 81/100

Mortlach 13 yo 1997 Murray McDavid

May 14, 2012

Some quite unusual flavours in this malt that was probably from a weak cask and saved by the finish. I like it, but it is a rather special dram. – Rating: 85/100

Bunnahabhain 1979/2011 Adelphi

May 14, 2012

The nose of this oldie is very impressive, but palate and finish are strangely weak in comparison. – Rating: 84/100

Lochside 1965/2001 Adelphi

May 13, 2012
Thumbnail image for Lochside 1965/2001 Adelphi

A superb sherried whisky, the wood influence is rather strong but kept in check by the rich sweet and fruity aromas. – Rating: 91/100

Glendronach 1972/2011 Cask 712

May 13, 2012

Outstanding. Not too much wood, not too much spice, just enormously rich and complex yet full of elegance. – Rating: 93/100

If You Found The Last Bottle…

May 12, 2012

Time for another poll. This is a tough one, even though it is a purely academical question.

Linkwood 1984/2012 Adelphi

May 12, 2012

Quite a nice dram with an intriguing nose and a well-balanced palate. The pricing is adequate for its age but there are better deals out there. – Rating: 84/100

Benriach 1976/2011 Cask 6942

May 12, 2012

The light smokiness on the palate makes this a perfect old-fashioned high end Scotch. You need to take your time to enjoy its many flavours. – Rating: 89/100

Benriach 12 yo Sherry Wood

May 12, 2012

This sherried whisky is a bit on the dry side which adds an interesting dimension to the fruity base spirit. – Rating: 85/100

Three Whisky Ads I Really Like

May 11, 2012

More than once I have been grumpy about whisky marketing stunts because I just have a bullshit allergy. But here are three examples of campaigns that I honestly enjoy.

Alloa 1964/2008 Alambic Classique

May 10, 2012

A big single grain from the days when they still made it from maize. This gives it a touch of bourbon but with an overwhelming fruitiness and less wood despite its high age. – Rating: 90/100

Glendronach 12 yo Original

May 8, 2012
Thumbnail image for Glendronach 12 yo Original

Quite a nice combination of flavours, but the mouthfeel is slightly watery. Still a pretty good daily dram. – Rating: 82/100

Glendronach 21 yo Parliament

May 8, 2012

If you don’t mind a pinch of sulphur, this is an excellent, deep and richly sherried malt for you. The wood is there but does not overpower it. – Rating: 87/100

Why I Prefer Pay Per Dram Whisky Shows After All

May 8, 2012

Last year I ran a poll here asking what type of whisky events readers prefer, all inclusive or pay per dram. All inclusive won by a good margin, and I promised to post an in-depth comparison in the future.

Port Charlotte 2001/2011 For Whiskyfriends in Denmark

May 7, 2012

The delightful nose suggests a higher age, but the palate is still vibrant and youthful. The very strong sherry suits the very strong spirit very well. – Rating: 88/100
