Auchentoshan 11 yo 1999 Bordeaux Matured

by Oliver Klimek on May 26, 2012

My Tasting Notes:

Colour: Dark amber
Nose: Raisins, hints of grappa, Black Forest cake, orange zest, cinnamon, white pepper.
Palate: Sweet raisins, cherries, brambles, butterscotch, cinnamon.
Finish: Long, sweet and fruity.
Overall: Even though it has been fully matured in wine casks, the Bordeaux does not overpower the whisky. Very smooth on the palate but also forceful at the same time.

Rating: 85/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$

Excellent to know. We bought this one for a vertical tasting we will be doing in June. Was a bit nervous about our choice as I thought the Bordeaux influence might be overwhelming.

Look forward to this dram soon.

Thanks Oliver!

Quite a few people in the blind tasting competition thought it was a sherried malt 😉 Of course you can taste it’s not from a bourbon cask. But it is well made.

It’s only now that I realise that this Whisky has been fully matured in ex-wine casks. Now I’m curious how they treated those casks… Heavily charred? Because otherwise it would be very overpowering. Perhaps a good alternative for coping with the shortage of sherry casks these days…
