Michael Jackson: Whisky – The Definitive World Guide

by Oliver Klimek on March 27, 2012

Today is the 70th Birthday of Michael Jackson who died of a heart attack on 30th August 2007. For the fifth time now, whisky lovers around the globe are raising their drams to Michael Jackson on this International Whisky Day.  (Don’t be fooled by cheap imitations!)

The Definitive World Guide is Jackson’s last work, and it it still is widely available. He acted as editor this time, supported by several renowned whisky writers like Dave Broom, Martine Nouet or Jürgen Deibel. The scope of the book encompasses the entire world of whisky, its history, knowledge about its production, description of distilleries worldwide and tips to enjoy it.

I have had this book since it was published in 2005. It played a major role in fuelling my interest for whisky which eventually led me to launch this very blog here. When I first bought this book, I would never have thought than I’d ever be able to meet some of the contributors for a dram….

Text and pictures are kept in perfect balance, so you can use the book just to browse around a little but also to learn a plethora of facts about whisky. As can be expected from such high profile writers, everything is well researched, there is no nasty half-baked knowledge like it is sometimes found in less prolific sources. Of course the latest developments in the whisky business are missing in this book, but still this does not render the content obsolete at all.

If you are interested in a comprehensive summary of all things whisky, this book cannot be avoided.

Here’s to you, Michael!
