I have yet to give you the results of the latest poll on dramming.com. This time the topic was the ever so controversial presence of sulphur in whisky. 84 readers were kind enough to answer the question how they are affected personally by sulphur in their whisky. Here are the questions and the results:
- I can’t stand sulphur – 37 votes – 44%
- Some whiskies may benefit from sulphur – 32 votes – 38%
- I don’t know how sulphur tastes – 14 votes – 17%
- Sulphur ? Give me more! – 1 vote – 1%
Although it was pretty much predictable that the majority of voters would be not pleased by sulphured whisky, I was a little suprised that the margin between sulphur haters an the people tolerating sulphur at least to some extent was actually rather small.
We should also note that one sixth of the readers have no idea what sulphur in whisky tastes like and probably only scratch their heads about the somtimes fierce arguments in forums and blogs. Evidently, there is a need for education on this subject.
With the pro-sulphur votes that high, whisky makers should not be afraid to be open about using sulphur-“infested” sherry casks for their expressions. This way, both the ones who like it and the ones who dislike it will know what they can expect, and the uninformed will be able to learn what all this fuzz is about.
