Bowmore 1990/2010 A. D. Rattray

July 31, 2011

Quite a dry dram, but very complex and extremely enjoyable. It is very smooth neat, there is not really a need to add much water. – Rating: 88/100

Karuizawa 1990/2009 for Whisky Live

July 30, 2011

A very fine sherry profile is somewhat disturbed by a quite strong spice and alcohol punch. – Rating: 84/100

Mellow Corn

The flavour profile is not too different from a maize based Scotch grain whisky. There is a youthful sharpness that is a bit too dominant for my taste. – Rating: 78/100

The Tweeddale Blend Batch #1

Quite nice for a blend of this age, with a rather complex flavour profile. It feels a bit “edgy” though – Rating: 81/100

In case you haven’t heard it yet: The 27th of March has been proclaimed as World Whisky DayTM. Let’s take a closer look at this planned event.

Ardmore Traditional Cask

July 26, 2011
Thumbnail image for Ardmore Traditional Cask

After a great nose, the palate of this peated Speyside malt trails a bit behind as the fruit has lost some of its influence. Still a very nice dram, though. – Rating: 83/100

Tullibardine 1965/2010

July 25, 2011

The age of this malt malt is rather obvious due to its driness, but it can’t really be called woody. In fact it is a very fine whisky with quite a lot of flavours to explore. – Rating: 87/100

Sheep Dip

A delicious blended malt full of rich flavours. It is a bit on the sweet side, but fruit and gentle spice give it a good balance. – Rating: 86/100

Here is a recipe for a cocktail that tries to capture the mood of sunny Speyside evenings in both style and colour.

Top 10 Overpriced Scotch Whiskies

July 22, 2011

This is an entirely subjective collection of whisky pricing monstrosities that I have come across in the past months.

Amrut Herald

July 21, 2011

Spices are the main attraction of this malt, underlined by sweetness and fruit. Does the additional island maturation make a difference? I am still not sure. But good whisky it is. – Rating: 84/100

Tullibardine 1976/2010 Single Cask

July 20, 2011

If you give it a little time and water, you are rewarded with a very flavoursome and complex dram. You always feel the age, but it is still very livley too. – Rating: 86/100

Laphroaig 1989/2009 Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask

July 19, 2011

This dram is living proof that combining peat and sherry can work very well. Strangely it feels slighty watery neat, but adding a little water gives it some more depth. – Rating: 89/100

Tullibardine 1988/2010

July 18, 2011

Another somewhat disappointing Tully. The nose is a bit underwhelming, the palate shows more promise but still has a slightly lackluster feel to it. – Rating: 75/100

The Difficult Arts Of Reading And Writing

July 16, 2011

I received quite a bashing from a few people for my blog post and forum contributions regarding the new Amrut Herald release. And in hindsight, sometimes reading and sometimes writing was to blame.

Tullibardine 1993/2010

July 15, 2011

This light bodied whisky is rather subdued on both nose and palate. It could be a nice aperitve dram, if the flavours were a bit more intense. But so the impression of it lacking something dominates. – Rating: 75/100

Imperial 1997/2010 Gordon & Macphail

July 14, 2011
Thumbnail image for Imperial 1997/2010 Gordon & Macphail

On the nose this malt seems older than it actually is, the palate is more youthful. A very strong attack on nose and palate calls for water which brings out more spices in exchange for sweetness. – Rating: 87/100

Tullibardine Aged Oak

July 13, 2011

I quite like the nose of this malt, but the palate feels very watery. This one should have at least 46%, then it could be quite nice indeed. – Rating: 77/100

Last week, the Indian Amrut distillery announced a very special whisky release: The Amrut Herald.

Tullibardine Sherry Wood 1998/2008

July 11, 2011

This sherry finish has an unusal savoury quality to it which is not at all unpleasant. The complexity created by this is quite stunning.
