Hazelburn 8 yo Cask Strength

by Oliver Klimek on June 20, 2011

UK exclusive – 54%

My Tasting Notes

Colour: Dark amber
Nose: Polished wood, orange marmalade, toffee, nutmeg, tobacco and a whiff of gunpowder.
Palate: Orange zest, red currant, raisins, honey, tea, nutmeg and hints of pepper.
Finish: Long, fruity and slighly dry.
Overall: Even though it is only 8 years, this malt shows some characertistics of older whiskies. There is a lot going on in this fine and richly flavoured dram.

Any chance you’ve tried the Hazelburn Bourbon Wood CS expression? I’m curious how the two compare, as they’re basically the same price for me locally.

No, sorry. I have never even seen that one. That would be an interesting expression since normally with Hazelburn there are sherry casks involved.

The Bourbon Wood seems to have been a bit of a rare release. But then even the new Cask Strength doesn’t seem to have broad distribution yet either. Though I don’t think you’re right about it being a UK exclusive. I’ve seen it on the shelves here in Portland, OR.

This is what I was told when I bought it at the Cadenhead’s shop in Edinburgh last year. But they may have eased up on their distribution policy since then.

Things may also be changing since they changed their U.S. importer earlier this year.
