The combination of whisky and cheese is nothing uncommon these days. I even made an experiment of marinating stilton in port wood whisky a while ago. Let me present you now another recipe that involves cheese and whisky.

Racke Rauchzart

This blend is aptly named “Tender Smoke”. I really like the balance of flavours. If they were stronger, this €10 dram would beat most well-known entry level blends. But it feels much too toned down. – Rating: 62/100

Dailuaine 1974 34 yo Mackillop’s Choice

March 30, 2011

The nose of this old malt is fantastic, but palate and finish fail to convince me. This may have matured some years too long. – Rating: 80/100

Glencraig 1974/2008 SMWS 104.11

March 29, 2011

A great full-bodied malt with a floral hint that is just light enough not to be disturbing. The Lomond malt is a little unusual but very very tasty . – Rating: 88/100

It’s been just over two months now that I launched my Turning Vodka Into Whisky experiment. I am sure some of you will have already wondered what happened to the bottle.

Longmorn 1996/2009 Dun Bheagan

March 28, 2011

Full-bodied, rich and creamy – this malt shows a delightful combination of sweet and fruity flavours that makes it a perfect after-dinner dram. – Rating: 86/100

Aberlour 1992/2010 Cooper’s Choice

March 26, 2011

An unusal bourbon cask bottling of Aberlour. It is very spicy in an aromatic sense and still remarkably smooth and gentle. The liquorice note is rather prominent. – Rating: 83/100

Glenesk 1982/1997 Cadenhead’s

March 25, 2011

A very spicy malt with an impressive nose. But on the palate there seems to something missing to balance out the spiciness. – Rating: 81/100

Tomatin 1990/2008 Single Cask #16351

March 24, 2011

This malt is proof that all casks are different. It shares similarities with neighbouring cask #16352 but the flavour profile is notably more complex and richer overall. – Rating: 86/100

Inchfad 2001/2007

March 23, 2011

After a short while, the nose is rather pleasant. The palate is not quite as interesting, though. One of the better farmyard drams of Loch Lomond. – Rating: 72/100

Inchmoan 2001/2005

March 22, 2011

Avoid. – Rating: 23/100

A very flavourful Clynelish proving that age is not everything for a whisky. I like it considerably better than the 13 yo I tasted yesterday. – Rating: 86/100

If there is one topic that is constantly popular in discussions among whisky lovers, then it’s the question if whisky should be scored or not.

Clynelish 1997/2010 James MacArthur

March 19, 2011

The character of this malt reminds me of Highland Park. It is not from the strongest cask but it is still an enjoyable dram. – Rating: 83/100

Highland Park 1996/2010 Glasgow’s Whisky Festival

March 18, 2011

This rich and flavoursome malt has that waxy character you’d usually expect from a much older malt. The peat is there but only in the background. – Rating: 86/100

New Poll: Sulphur In Your Whisky

March 18, 2011

A while ago I wrote an article about sulphur in whisky. But what do whisky lovers actually think about sulphur?

Bunnahabhain 1978/2008 Samaroli Coiltean

March 17, 2011

For a 30 year old whisky this Bunnahabhain seems amazingly immature. This was clearly not the best cask of 1978. But yet there it has a captivating element. – Rating: 77/100

Glenfarclas 105

March 16, 2011
Thumbnail image for Glenfarclas 105

A great young sherry monster at a budget price. It’s not the most complex malt on the planet, but it is extremely enjoyable nonetheless. – Rating: 85/100
