Canadian Whisky Awards 2010

by Oliver Klimek on December 6, 2010

Today, Davin de Kergommeaux, publisher of canadianwhisky.org announced the winners of his newly created Canadian Whisky Awards.

“On no, yet another award”, some of you will undoubtedly think. It’s true indeed, whisky awards and competitions awards have become plentiful in recent years. And do I share the mixed feelings that many have about award inflation.

But I have to say that I am quite happy with this new award. Malt Maniac Davin de Kergommeaux has been a strong independent advocate for Candian whisky for years and his website is a great tribute to this often overlooked whisky region. This is not a competition where bottles have to be sent in for an entry fee, the awards are strictly non-commercial without any affilitation to the Canadin whisky industry.

Canadian whisky has had a bit of a wallflower image for a long time, and its reputation is certainly not helped by the fact that Canadian law allows 9.09% of non-whisky flavouring to be mixed with the spirit. It is often forgotten that there is more to Canadian whisky than just mass-produced cheap blends. Perhaps the Canadian Whisky Awards can help to point out that some cracking drams can be found in Canada as well.
