Redbreast 12

by Oliver Klimek on November 8, 2010

Pure Potstill – 40%

My Tasting Notes:

Colour: Rich amber
Nose: Creme brulee with orange zests, peaches, cinnamon.
Palate: Caramel, honey, peaches, oranges, a mix of mild spices.
Finish: Very long, smooth and fruity.
Overall: A very rich and creamy Irish whiskey with an abundance of sweet and fruity flavours. The low bottling strength of 40% takes a bit off the pleasure and is to blame that a place in the Top Dram list is missed.

Rating: 89/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$

Buy Redbreast 12 at Master of Malt

Redbreast 12 is currently at the top of my Bang for the Buck list

Oliver, I have to admit that I bought Readbreast 12YO after an enthusiastic review at Malt Advocate. I have to admit that I was very much disappointed but have been trying this whiskey quite a few time recently and although I enjoy the nose but still cannot understand the appeal of its taste to so many.
I have read with great interest your tasting notes and I am just wondering what I am missing. This is a very honest question and I am really questioning my understanding of whisky.

I think you just have to accept that the fact your taste is different from others in respect of the Redbreast. Because taste is so personal this will happen to everyone sooner or later, even if you usually trust the the reviewer.

I myself was quite surprised that John Hansell gave it 96 points. You may also notice this in my comments to his blog post. I still think it’s damn good but not quite as close to perfection in my view.

So don’t bother, your opinion on a specific whisky is just as good as mine or John’s or Jim’s or Serge’s.
