Talisker 57°N

An excellent dram, I like it a tad better than the standard 10yo. Fruiter nose but peatier and spicier palate. – Score: 88/100

Tobermory 1972/2008 Whisky-Doris

February 27, 2010

Very complex and concentrated, the lightly peated sherry fruitiness reminds me a bit of Bowmore. Wood tannins are surely there after 35 years, but not overwhelmingly strong. – Score: 88/100

Glenlivet Nadurra Batch 0407

February 26, 2010

A very nice and complex malt that should be enjoyed slowly. Needs quite a bit of water to soften the alcohol bite. – Score: 84/100

Craigellachie 1994/2007 Cadenhead

February 25, 2010

I’m not a big fan of herbal malts, but this one is really nice. The complex aromas need some time to develop, though. – Score: 85/100

Bushmills Single Malt 10 yo

Smooth and very fruity, not very complex but quite enjoyable.- Score: 81/100

Cutty Sark

February 24, 2010

You can tell that this is very young. Much too young for my taste. It tastes almost like a German Korn. But at least it does not seem to be coloured. – Score: 58/100

Bruichladdich 3D3 – Norrie Campbell Tribute

A very nice vatting, quite peaty but the typical Laddie fruitiness is always present. – Score: 86/100

Banff 24.12.1974/ 10.2009 Jack Wiebers

February 22, 2010

A great old whisky, creamy and fruity with a big nose backed by a big palate. The gentle smoke blends in perfectly. – Score: 91/100

Bible Lessons

At the Finest Spirits Festival in Munich last weekend I had the chance to have a few words with Jim Murray who had been placed in a rather forlorn corner of the basement. I took the chance and bought one of his Whisky Bibles which he was kind enough to sign for me.

Macduff 1990/2009 Whisky Doris

February 18, 2010

Needs time and water to open up. Great nose, but the palate is too herbal for my taste, and even with quite a lot of water it is pretty “hot”. – Score: 74/100

Glenrothes Kirsch 07/1990 – 02/2000

February 17, 2010

Quite enjoyable, but the youthful spirit character is a bit too dominant – Score: 80/100

Free e-Book: The Whisky Alphabet…and a little more

February 16, 2010

I have prepared a small e-book in PDF format that I will hand out for free if you are interested in joining my mailing list.

The e-book is called “The Whisky Alphabet”. It is a glossary of more than 200 whisky terms on 25 pages. I know there are already quite a few whisky glossaries out there, but I think you will have to do quite some googling to find all the knowledge that is condensed in the Whisky Alphabet

A Broken Down Rollercoaster at Ardbeg

February 15, 2010

Today, thousands of Ardbeg fans were sitting in front of their computers with itchy fingers and increased saliva flow, eagerly awaiting the launch of the new Committee realease Ardbeg Rollercoaster. In the official announcment mailed out a week before the launch, Ardbeg had recommended them to order from their website as it would be quicker than by mail.

Penderyn Aur Cymru 09/2005

February 13, 2010

Amazingly good given its young age. Very fruity and quite enjoyable. Youthful spicyness shines through, though. – Score: 76/100

Longrow CV

February 12, 2010

About as spicy as the Springbank CV, but here the peat acts as a strong counterpart. Sweetness and fruitiness are enhanced by a few drops of water. Nice! – Score: 84/100

Whisky Cocktail Recipe: The Machattan

I have always wondered why there are so little cocktails based on sherry. After pondering this for a while I had an idea: Why not make a Manhattan-like cocktail with sherry and a sherried Scotch ?

Springbank CV

February 11, 2010

The nose takes a while to open up and actually becomes very pleasant, but the palate cannot quite live up to that. The spicyness is too dominant for my taste as it is not sufficiently counterbalanced by the other flavour components. – Score: 74/100

Hazelburn CV

February 10, 2010

A wonderful fresh whisky with a lot of complexity. – Score: 86/100

Whisky and the Web 2.0 – A Clash of Cultures?

February 9, 2010

There have been some discussions on the German The Whisky Store Forum that have raised interesting questions that I decided to tackle here.

The spark for finally putting it all together was John Hansell’s decision to give the 2010 Malt Advocate “Pioneer of the Year” Award to us whisky bloggers.
