Whisky is not only good for drinking, it can also be used in the kitchen. In this recipe, whisky is used to give the final touch to a BBQ sauce.

Slyrs 2005/2008

This whisky was aged three years in fresh American oak barrels. It’s a bit of a crossing between a single malt and a bourbon. Not bad for a 3yo, but you have to like the wood influence. – Score: 68/100

Whisky and Vodka – Two Distant Relatives

August 10, 2009

Many people do not realize that whisky and vodka are actually two different sides of the same coin. In a way they are completely different, but both are made from grain – if you don’t take into account some weird vodka varieties made from potatoes or even molasses.

Quite untamed for a Bowmore, almost Laphroaig-ish but not quite as complex. But still quite a nice dram. – Score: 85/100

Auchentoshan Select

The only good thing I can say about this expression is that it is discontinued. If you happen to find a bottle, avoid it! This is a perfect example of an NAS statement used to disguise immature whisky. – Score: 55/100

The nose is exceptionally good, the palate is slightly wearker. But still a great whisky, well-balanced and complex – Score: 88/100

Complex with a strong wood influence, A bit too spicy for my taste. – Score: 79/100

Loch Lomond 21 yo

August 3, 2009

For a long time this was the cheapest 21 yo on the market, now replaced by an 18 yo. In comparison to the standard bottling, this is a drinkable whisky, but that’s about all you can say about it. – Score: 72/100

Devious Vattings Vol. 1

This little post series is nothing for the faint of heart. It is about mixing whisky with other spirits, but not in a cocktail way. But rather I will make a 50/50 mix of two spirits.

Very enjoyable if you like finishes. I doubt that much of the distilery character is preserved, but it doesn’t taste bad at all. – Score: 82/100
