Poll Results: Favourite Whisky Region

August 29, 2009

The result does not have much of a statistical value, but nevertheless the winner is not really a surprise:

Aberlour A’bunadh Batch 22

August 27, 2009
Thumbnail image for Aberlour A’bunadh Batch 22

Quite sweet and spicy, I remember earlier batches that were more on the fruity side. But it’s a very nice whisky. – Score; 87/100

Glenmorangie Original

August 25, 2009
Thumbnail image for Glenmorangie Original

The nose is in 80+ territory but the palate just doesn’t live up to it. Nice for just sipping, but notthing really worth to remember. – Score: 71/100

Devious Vattings Vol. 3

August 23, 2009

This is the last part of my little adventure of marrying Scotch with unusual partners.

So far we have seen that it is not advisable to strive too far away from whisky territory. This is why I intend to reapproach it in the last session.

Macallan 1989/2005 Murray McDavid

August 23, 2009

A very well-balanced whisky. The finish fits well and does not dominate. – Score: 85/100

Amrut Peated

August 21, 2009

Quite unusual, too sharp if drunk neat. Not bad but not my cup of tea. – Score: 77/100

When you plan to invite some friends to a whisky tasting there are quite a few things that should be considered. And there are some pitfalls you should avoid.

Laphroaig 18 yo

August 19, 2009
Thumbnail image for Laphroaig 18 yo

Much more wood and less rounded than the 15yo. In a way it’s closer to the 10yo. But I think I still prefer the 15yo. – Score: 86/100

Laphroaig 15 yo

August 19, 2009

Lacks the punch of the 10 yo in favour of more complexity. Fruitiness diminuishes from nose to finish, “medicinality” increases. – Score: 88/100

Whisky search terms on Google

August 19, 2009

A substantial source of trafic to the site are search engines, Google in particular. The nice thing about Google Analytics is that it gives you a list of all search terms that brought visitors to your site.

North Port / Brechin 1982/2008

August 17, 2009

This whisky is rather tame for its age. A definite lack of complexity and the aromas don’t really fit together – Score: 69/100

Glenfarclas 1996/2008 Sherry

August 17, 2009

The nose is really impressive but the palate can’t cope. There is not much to be found in this whisky. Still a nice dram, but not more. – Score: 78/100

Anorak question: Influence of the still size ?

August 17, 2009

Now here is a question that has been buzzing in my head for a while, and I have not found a statisfying answer to it yet.

We know that the shape of a pot still has a lot of influence on the distilled spirit.

Compass Box Peat Monster

August 16, 2009

If this is a monster, it’s a gentle one. Great balance between peat, fruit and spice. – Score: 85/100

Ben Nevis 1999/2007 Murray McDavid

August 16, 2009

Defined manily by its finish. Bottled a bit too young for my taste as it is a bit “scratchy”. But still not a bad dram. – Score: 78/100

Bowmore Darkest 15 yo

August 14, 2009
Thumbnail image for Bowmore Darkest 15 yo

A great mix of sherry and peat (approx. 70/30) The name “Darkest” is fitting not only beacuse of the colour. It really tastes “dark”. – Score: 88/100

Laphroaig Quarter Cask

August 14, 2009
Thumbnail image for Laphroaig Quarter Cask

This is a powerful dram. An uncompromising young Laphroaig enhanced with strong wood notes. A little water seems to make it even stronger. Nothing for the faint of heart, but a true delight for those who can take a punch. – Score: 90/100

Paralyze your taste buds to enjoy whisky?

August 13, 2009

In the German TWS whisky forum there is currently a debate about the best way to enjoy the new peat monster from Ardbeg, the Supernova. I have not tasted it before, but the discussion highlights a point that I think is imortant to whisky tasting in general.

Devious Vattings Vol. 2

August 12, 2009

As promised, I return with another cross-vatting session. This time I will be a bit more daring.

Talisker 10 yo

August 11, 2009
Thumbnail image for Talisker 10 yo

Almost no sweetnees, just peat and spice. More like an Islay whisky than many Islay whiskies… – Score: 86/100
